What is a medical device?

Medical devices are instruments, machines, implants, or other similar articles used to diagnose, prevent, monitor, treat, or alleviate diseases and medical conditions in humans. They can range from simple tools like thermometers and bandages to complex technologies such as pacemakers, MRI machines, and surgical robots. Medical devices are regulated to ensure their safety and effectiveness, and they play a crucial role in modern healthcare by supporting both diagnosis and treatment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the medical devices industry?

To excel in the medical devices industry, professionals typically need a background in biomedical engineering, life sciences, or a related field, often paired with relevant technical expertise or certifications. Familiarity with regulatory standards (such as FDA or ISO), CAD software, and quality management systems is crucial for product development and compliance. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and addressing complex challenges. These competencies ensure the development of safe, effective, and compliant devices that meet both regulatory requirements and patient needs.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals working in medical device roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in medical device roles often face challenges such as staying updated with rapidly evolving regulatory standards, ensuring strict compliance with quality assurance protocols, and managing cross-functional collaboration between engineering, clinical, and regulatory teams. Addressing these challenges requires continuous learning, strong communication skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Joining industry associations and participating in ongoing training can also help professionals remain current with best practices and regulatory changes.

Job description

At a glance

Company: Able Medical Devices
Location: Marquette, MI 49855
Job Type: Full-Time
Experience: 1+ years
Machines: CNC Equipment, Manual Lathe, Mill & Grinding

Why this job is worth considering

Able Medical Devices builds precision-machined surgical implants and instruments, including products like the Valkyrie Thoracic Fixation System. As a CNC Setup Technician, you'll own the setup and adjustment side of CNC production, dialing in wear offsets, macro changes, and process parameters to keep prototype and production medical device runs on target. You'll also work directly with Development Engineering on new part designs, which gives this role more design input than a typical setup position. It's precision medical device work in an ISO 13485-certified, FDA-registered environment, with a full-time schedule and relocation assistance available.

What you'll be doing

  • Set up CNC equipment, workholding, and tooling, and troubleshoot wear offsets, macro changes, and other process parameters to keep production running.
  • Manufacture standard production and prototype medical devices, including machining parts, fixtures, and tooling on manual lathe, mill, and grinding equipment.
  • Collaborate with Development Engineering to optimize new product designs for manufacturability.
  • Use precision measuring and gauging tools to inspect parts before, during, and after machining.
  • Monitor machining operations for malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions and adjust machine controls as needed.
  • Interpret GD&T specifications to optimize fixturing and wear offsets.
  • Document process sheets, prints, tool lists, and inspection procedures to verify conformance to requirements.
  • Run preventive maintenance checks and help maintain an orderly 5S work area while resolving machining problems to hit the production schedule.

Machines, controls and software

CNC equipment setup and adjustment, plus manual lathe, mill, and grinding machines for prototype and standard production support.

What we're looking for

Required:

  • 1+ years of hands-on experience setting up and adjusting CNC equipment, including wear offsets and macro-level process changes.
  • Manual lathe, mill, or grinding experience for prototype and fixture work.
  • Ability to read prints and interpret GD&T specifications.
  • Ability to use precision measuring and gauging tools for in-process inspection.

Pay, benefits and schedule

Full-Time schedule. Relocation assistance is available for candidates relocating to the Marquette, MI area.
