What does a medical device firmware engineer do?

A Medical Device Firmware Engineer designs, develops, and tests embedded software (firmware) that runs on medical devices. Their work ensures that devices like pacemakers, infusion pumps, and diagnostic equipment operate safely and accurately according to medical standards. They collaborate with hardware engineers, software developers, and regulatory teams to meet strict healthcare regulations and deliver reliable solutions. The role requires expertise in programming, electronics, and knowledge of regulatory guidelines such as FDA or ISO standards for medical devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical device firmware engineer?

To thrive as a Medical Device Firmware Engineer, you need a solid background in embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and an understanding of medical device regulations, usually supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), microcontroller development environments, and regulatory standards like IEC 62304 is typically required, along with experience using version control tools. Excellent problem-solving skills, meticulous attention to detail, and strong collaboration abilities set top performers apart. These skills ensure the development of safe, reliable, and compliant firmware critical to the performance and regulatory approval of medical devices.

What types of cross-functional collaboration can a medical device firmware engineer expect in their day-to-day work?

Medical Device Firmware Engineers typically work closely with hardware engineers, software developers, quality assurance teams, and regulatory specialists. This collaboration ensures that firmware integrates seamlessly with hardware components, meets software requirements, and complies with medical industry standards. Daily tasks may involve joint troubleshooting sessions, design reviews, and validating new product features. Effective communication and teamwork are essential for navigating the regulated environment and delivering safe, reliable medical devices.

What is the difference between Medical Device Firmware Engineer vs Medical Software Engineer?

AspectMedical Device Firmware EngineerMedical Software Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related fields; certifications in medical device standards (e.g., ISO 13485)Usually holds a degree in computer science, software engineering, or related; certifications in healthcare software standards
Work EnvironmentDesigns embedded firmware for medical devices, often in regulated environmentsDevelops software applications for healthcare systems, often in clinical or hospital settings
Industry UsageCommonly employed by medical device manufacturers and biotech companiesUsed by healthcare software providers, hospitals, and health IT firms

While both roles involve healthcare technology, Medical Device Firmware Engineers focus on embedded firmware for medical hardware, whereas Medical Software Engineers develop software applications for healthcare systems. Both require knowledge of medical standards and work in regulated environments, but their focus areas differ significantly.

Job description

About the role
Own the platform firmware that brings our AI accelerator systems to life and keeps them secure, healthy, and observable - from secure boot and the hardware root of trust, through embedded-controller/BMC and device firmware, to power management, telemetry, and the debug infrastructure that keeps the platform running at scale.
What You'll Do
  • Platform firmware - develop firmware across the stack: boot ROM/bootloaders, embedded controllers / BMC, and device firmware for our accelerator silicon and systems
  • Secure boot & root of trust - measured/verified boot, code signing and chain-of-trust, authenticated firmware update (anti-rollback), and secure debug
  • Power management - power sequencing, PMIC/voltage-rail control, DVFS, and power/thermal protection and budgeting
  • Monitoring & telemetry - sensors, health/RAS, error logging, and platform management/observability interfaces
  • Debug & bring-up - JTAG/scan and debug infrastructure; board and post-silicon bring-up
  • Partner with silicon/architecture, hardware/board, and software teams on firmware interfaces, threat modeling, and HW/SW co-design
  • Assisted tool flows to accelerate development and review
What We're Looking For
  • Strong C and assembly for embedded/firmware; bare-metal or RTOS on ARM (or similar)
  • 5+ years developing platform/system firmware - boot, BMC/embedded controllers, and device firmware
  • Hands-on with secure boot / hardware root of trust, code signing, and secure/anti-rollback update
  • Power-management firmware - power sequencing, PMIC/voltage regulators, DVFS, and thermal/power telemetry
  • Platform monitoring & debug - sensor/telemetry, RAS/error handling, JTAG/debug, and management interfaces
  • Comfort at the HW/SW boundary - reading datasheets/specs, lab bring-up, scopes/logic analyzers
  • (Optional) Rust for firmware/embedded development; OpenBMC, UEFI/coreboot; accelerator/GPU/server firmware; applied crypto & key management; TEE (TrustZone); side-channel/fault-injection awareness; standards (NIST SP 800-193, FIPS 140-3); SBOM/supply-chain security
