About the role
Nova Biomedical is seeking an Embedded Firmware Manager to lead and develop a team of firmware engineers within our embedded systems organization. This role is responsible for overseeing embedded firmware development across multiple products and platforms, ensuring high-quality execution, predictable delivery, and alignment with system architectures, regulatory requirements, and long-term product strategy.
The Embedded Firmware Manager is accountable for technical execution, people leadership, and process maturity. This role partners closely with electrical engineering, quality, manufacturing, and program leadership to deliver robust, scalable firmware solutions from concept through production and lifecycle support.
The ideal candidate combines strong embedded firmware expertise with proven people leadership skills. They are comfortable operating as a player-coach, capable of providing technical guidance and hands-on support as needed, while primarily driving teams toward successful outcomes through planning, mentorship, and accountability.

What you'll do
  • Firmware Development & Architecture: Oversee and guide the design, development, testing, and maintenance of embedded firmware across multiple products and generations. Ensures firmware architectures align with system requirements, regulatory constraints, and long-term platform strategy.
  • Technical Leadership: Guide a team of engineers, provide mentorship, and enforce best practices in firmware development. Establish long-term technical roadmaps for embedded firmware, balancing performance, cost, reliability, security, and regulatory needs. Influence technical direction across teams through mentorship, design reviews, and technical leadership.
  • System Integration: Work closely with hardware, software, and product teams to ensure seamless integration of firmware with system components. Partner with quality, regulatory, and manufacturing teams to ensure production readiness and lifecycle robustness.
  • Performance Optimization: Analyze and improve firmware efficiency, reliability, and power consumption. Ensure firmware architectures meet applicable safety, security, and regulatory requirements.
  • Code Review & Documentation: Lead and participate in code reviews, enforce coding standards. Ensure high-quality technical documentation, including architecture specifications, interface definitions, and design rationales.
  • Troubleshooting & Debugging: Guide team in root-cause analysis for critical field or production issues and define systemic corrective actions. Act as a technical escalation point for complex or critical firmware and system-level issues.
  • Security & Compliance: Ensure firmware adheres to industry standards, security best practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Research & Innovation: Stay updated with industry trends, emerging technologies, and contribute to firmware innovation initiatives.
  • Talent Development: Help define career development expectations and technical competency standards for embedded engineers, growing technical depth and leadership capability across the team. Provide technical leadership when working with external vendors and development partners.

What we are looking for in you
  • Experience: 12+ years of firmware development experience with a strong track record in embedded systems, and 3+ years of people leadership/management.
  • Programming Languages: Proficiency in C/C++ and assembly language for embedded development.
  • Embedded Systems Knowledge: Experience with various operating systems, bare-metal programming, and real-time constraints.
  • Hardware Familiarity: Understanding of microcontrollers (ARM, PIC, Renesas, MSP430, etc.), peripheral interfaces (SPI, I2C,UART), ADCs, DACs, and debugging tools. Ability to read schematics and use an oscilloscope.
  • Beneficial Experience: Experience with interfacing with chemical sensors and/or floating sensors.
  • Software Development Tools: Proficiency in version control (Git), build systems, and scripting (Python, Bash).
  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work with multidisciplinary teams, and influence across team.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical or Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

Physical Requirements for this role include:
  • Must be able to use basic office equipment: computer, printer, copier, telephone, etc.
  • Ability to function in a changing, high-impact position, with deadline and resource constraints
  • Ability to travel less than 10% of the time

Work Location: Hybrid work schedule on-site in Waltham
Targeted Salary Range: $165,000 - $190,000/year.
