What is a medical coder government?

A Medical Coder in a government role is responsible for reviewing medical records and assigning standardized codes for diagnoses, procedures, and treatments for billing and reporting purposes. These coders typically work in federal agencies, Veterans Affairs hospitals, military healthcare facilities, or public health organizations. They ensure compliance with regulations such as Medicare, Medicaid, and other government-funded healthcare programs. Accuracy is critical, as these codes impact reimbursements and statistical data used for public health initiatives.

What are some common challenges faced by medical coders in government healthcare settings?

Medical Coders working in government settings often encounter the challenge of staying up to date with frequently changing regulations and coding standards specific to federal health programs. These roles may also involve navigating complex claims and documentation requirements, as well as ensuring strict compliance with privacy laws like HIPAA. Additionally, Medical Coders must work closely with other healthcare professionals to reconcile data discrepancies and support audits. Adapting to these challenges helps coders maintain high standards of accuracy and protects the integrity of government healthcare operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the medical coder government position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Medical Coder Government, a thorough understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and regulatory coding guidelines is essential, often requiring a certification such as CPC or CCS and experience with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS code sets. Familiarity with specialized coding software and government health information systems is important for accurate records management. Attention to detail, discretion, and strong organizational skills are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate coding for health services, compliance with federal regulations, and efficient claims processing within government healthcare programs.

Hybrid | Full-Time

About Navaide
Navaide partners with federal clients to deliver mission-focused solutions across financial management, ERP, and digital transformation. We bring deep domain expertise, practical execution, and a people-first culture to complex government environments.

Catalysts for a Stronger Tomorrow
At Navaide, we exist to empower organizations to evolve and adapt in a rapidly changing world. By combining human ingenuity with transformative technology, we develop innovative solutions that drive progress for the people and systems that strengthen our nation. Our mission is rooted in agility, scalability, and a commitment to exceeding expectations, ensuring impactful results for our clients and communities.

How You Will Make an Impact

Navaide is seeking a skilled Data Engineer to lead data engineering and analytics projects within the Palantir Foundry platform. The ideal candidate will be proficient in data architecture, processing, and solution development in Foundry's native platform. This role involves close collaboration with various departments and key client stakeholders to design and implement data solutions that enhance operational efficiency and decision-making. If you are proactive, curious, and a skilled analytics technologist with a pragmatic approach to engineering challenges, this role may be perfect for you.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Pipeline Design & Orchestration

  • Pipeline Development: Build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines in Foundry's Pipeline Builder and Code Repositories - from raw ingest through staging to curated, production-ready datasets.
  • Data Integration: Connect and sync external source systems into Foundry using Data Connection, unifying data across logistics, personnel, and financial domains.
  • Ontology Modeling: Design and extend object types, properties, and links in Ontology Manager, reflecting real-world mission processes and back downstream workflows.
  • Pipeline Hygiene: Enforce automation, version control, orchestration, and health monitoring via Data Lineage to keep data flows secure, repeatable, and auditable.
  • Architecture Standards: Define and enforce data architecture standards for distributed environments within Foundry and adjacent platforms.

Data Quality, Governance & Observability

  • Data Quality: Build scalable, rule-based methods in Foundry to assess accuracy, completeness, and timeliness - with feedback loops that drive remediation.
  • Lineage & Compliance: Leverage Data Lineage to trace dataset provenance, supporting discovery, traceability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Performance Optimization: Tune pipeline schedules, workloads, and resource allocation for cost-efficient, reliable performance.
  • Monitoring: Surface latency issues and pipeline failures against SLAs.

Collaboration & Standards Development

  • Cross-Team Partnership: Work directly with analysts, product leads, and mission stakeholders to translate requirements into clean, well-documented data products.
  • Technical Leadership: Mentor junior engineers and establish Foundry engineering standards for naming, object design, testing, and change management.

Relevant Skills & Experience

  • 4+ years of experience in data engineering, platform engineering, or analytics engineering
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining production-grade pipelines, data connections, and ontologies in Palantir Foundry (Pipeline Builder, Code Repositories, Ontology Manager, Data Lineage, Workshop)
  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL; comfort with TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Traditional data lakehouse experience (Databricks, Snowflake, dbt)
  • Familiarity with Foundry Data Connection architecture - setting up sources and syncs from external systems
  • Proven delivery in DoD or federal environments
  • Familiarity with Navy, DON, or DoD logistics, financial, or personnel data landscapes
  • Strong communication skills; able to work across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Palantir Foundry Data Engineer or Application Developer certification preferred
  • Eligibility to obtain US Government Security Clearance

Travel
Up to 10% travel, depending on environment cutovers, stakeholder design sessions, and validation/test events.

Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Information Systems, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
