Job description

Overview

Join our dedicated healthcare team at Advance Medical Lab as a Medical Billing Assistant, where your skills will play a key role in keeping our billing operations running smoothly. In this dynamic dual-function role, you will support our billing department by working accounts receivable, following up on claims, and ensuring accurate documentation — while also serving as the face of our lab during afternoon and evening hours. Your attention to detail and proactive approach will directly impact our revenue cycle and the quality of service we deliver to our patients and partner facilities. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment where your work makes a real difference, we want to hear from you.

Advance Medical Lab is a locally owned, CLIA-certified independent clinical laboratory that has proudly served the Rio Grande Valley since 2010. We provide diagnostic testing services to home health agencies, nursing homes, hospice providers, and walk-in patients across Hidalgo, Cameron, and Starr counties.
Duties

  • Assist the lead medical biller with denied and rejected claim follow-up
  • Check claim status with Medicare, Medicaid, and insurance payers
  • Post payments and maintain accurate accounts receivable records
  • Scan, index, and file paid claims and supporting billing documents
  • Perform data entry in billing software as directed
  • Research outstanding balances and document follow-up actions
  • Receive and process incoming fax orders from physicians and facilities
  • Greet and assist walk-in patients — check in, collect orders and insurance information
  • Coordinate with couriers on specimen pickups and delivery logistics
  • Answer phones and respond to inquiries in a professional manner
  • Complete end-of-day front desk close procedures

Requirements

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish — required, not preferred
  • Experience in medical billing, healthcare front desk, or medical office administration
  • Ability to work independently with no supervisor on-site during evening hours
  • Detail-oriented and organized — patient records and billing data require accuracy
  • Dependable and punctual — this shift is a coverage commitment, not flexible
  • Familiarity with medical billing software (athenaPractice or similar) is a plus
  • Knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding is a plus
  • Experience working denied or rejected insurance claims is a plus
