Medical Actor Simulation information
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Medical Actor (Standardized Patient), and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced by medical actors in simulation scenarios, and how can they be managed?
What are medical actor simulations?
What is the difference between Medical Actor Simulation vs Medical Scribe?
| Aspect | Medical Actor Simulation | Medical Scribe |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Minimal; often high school diploma or equivalent, training provided | Medical terminology knowledge; often certification or training in medical documentation |
| Work Environment | Healthcare simulation labs, training centers, hospitals | Hospitals, clinics, outpatient facilities |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Medical schools, training programs, healthcare simulation companies | Hospitals, physician practices, healthcare organizations |
Medical Actor Simulation involves role-playing as patients to help train healthcare professionals, focusing on realistic patient interactions. Medical Scribes assist clinicians by documenting patient encounters in real-time. While both roles support healthcare education and efficiency, Medical Actor Simulation emphasizes simulation training, whereas Medical Scribes focus on documentation support during actual patient visits.

Job description
Making family care possible. At Abby Care, we are tackling one of the most important and unsolved challenges of our time: family caregiving.
Over 50 million Americans are family caregivers for loved ones without pay, tools, or support. Our mission is clear and ambitious: to train and employ family caregivers so they can get paid for the care they already provide at home.
Abby Care is building a tech-powered, family-first care platform to efficiently deliver care, improve health outcomes, and provide the best-in-class experience nationwide.
We are rapidly expanding our mission and looking for passionate team members to join. Abby Care has partnered with leading insurance plans, healthcare providers, and community organizations. We're supported by top, mission-driven VCs to empower families throughout the country.
The Role:
We're looking for empathetic, reliable individuals to join us as Medical Actors (Standardized Patients) in Indianapolis, IN.
In this role, you'll help train future healthcare professionals by portraying realistic patient scenarios. You'll play an important part in preparing students-especially home health aides for real-life patient interactions by helping them practice communication, observation, and caregiving skills in a safe learning environment.
This is a part-time, onsite contract role, ideal for students or individuals interested in healthcare careers such as pre-med, pre-nursing, or behavioral health.
Key Responsibilities:
- Portray a variety of patient scenarios (e.g., elderly patients, adult/teen cases) based on guided scripts
- Interact with students in realistic caregiving situations to support their training
- Allow students to practice hands-on care techniques (e.g., hygiene support, basic patient care tasks)
- Observe student performance and objectively document what you see
- Provide input/feedback to the RN Clinical Instructor when needed
- Maintain professionalism and consistency across scenarios
This role involves physical interaction as part of training simulations, including:
- Assisting with simulated hygiene care (e.g., bed baths, with appropriate training attire such as swimwear and comfortable clothing to allow access for care practice)
- Light physical handling (e.g., being assisted in movement, hair washing, basic care routines)
- Candidates must be comfortable with hands-on participation and physical contact in a professional, controlled environment.
- High school diploma or GED required
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Dependable and punctual with a high level of professionalism
- Comfortable taking direction and following structured scenarios
- Willingness to participate in hands-on training simulations
- Interest in healthcare, caregiving, or behavioral health
- Background in acting, education, or healthcare (not required)
- Location: Indianapolis, IN (onsite)
- Schedule: 2-3 days per week, typically 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM or 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM (depending on availability/preference)
- Compensation: $17 per hour
We are an equal opportunity employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds, consistent with applicable laws. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, satisfactory references, and any required documentation.
Our Values
- Families FirstRedefining healthcare starts with how we treat the parents and children we serve. We go above and beyond for every family, building strong, lasting relationships. We continually ask ourselves, "Would we want this for our own families?"
- Urgency with PrecisionMillions of families are waiting for care, and they cannot wait, therefore this is not your typical 9 to 5 job. We match their urgency with our own, delivering exceptional care without compromise. Here, speed and excellence go hand in hand.
- Relentlessly ResourcefulAs an ambitious startup, we adapt quickly and make the most of limited time and resources. We solve challenges with creativity to deliver results without unnecessary complexity.
- Purpose with PositivityWe take our mission seriously while never losing sight of the people behind the work. Respect, kindness, memes, and coffee make us stronger as a team and better for the families we serve.
- Driven to Redefine What's PossibleWe are here to make healthcare better, which means asking hard questions, challenging outdated systems, and finding smarter, more compassionate ways to deliver care.
