What is the difference between Med Spa vs Esthetician?

AspectMed SpaEsthetician
CredentialsMedical certifications, licenses for advanced proceduresState licensing, esthetician license
Work EnvironmentMedical clinics, luxury spa settings, dermatology officesSpas, salons, skincare clinics
Services OfferedLaser treatments, Botox, fillers, chemical peelsFacials, waxing, skin analysis
Industry UsageMedical and aesthetic industryBeauty and skincare industry

Med Spa professionals typically have medical certifications and perform advanced aesthetic procedures in medical or luxury settings. Estheticians focus on skincare treatments like facials and waxing in spas or salons. While both work in the beauty and skincare industry, Med Spas offer more medical-grade services requiring specialized credentials.

What are some common challenges med spa professionals face when balancing client satisfaction with safety protocols?

Med Spa professionals often navigate the delicate balance between providing exceptional client experiences and adhering to strict safety and regulatory protocols. Clients may request treatments that are trending or popular but may not be suitable based on their medical history or skin type. It's crucial for professionals to educate clients, manage expectations, and sometimes decline certain procedures in the interest of client safety. Open communication, ongoing training, and teamwork with medical directors help ensure both client satisfaction and high standards of care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a med spa professional?

To thrive as a Med Spa Professional, you need expertise in aesthetic treatments, skincare knowledge, and often relevant licensure such as an esthetician or nursing credential. Familiarity with devices like lasers, injectables, and skincare product lines, as well as certifications in specific procedures, is commonly required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to provide a relaxing client experience help set top professionals apart. These skills ensure safe, effective treatments and foster client trust and satisfaction in a competitive wellness environment.

What is a med spa?

A med spa, short for medical spa, is a facility that combines traditional spa services with medical procedures typically found in a doctor's office. Med spas are supervised by licensed healthcare professionals and offer treatments such as Botox injections, laser hair removal, chemical peels, and skin rejuvenation therapies. These services are designed to improve appearance, boost confidence, and address various cosmetic concerns in a relaxing environment. Unlike regular day spas, med spas use advanced technology and medical-grade products to deliver more effective results.

Med Spa Manager - Aesthetics

Hartford, CT

Job description

Practice:
Growing Med Spa (Greater Hartford, CT)
Location:
Farmington Valley corridor, Greater Hartford CT (On-Site)
Schedule:
Full time, on site. Includes Saturday coverage.
Compensation:
$70,000 - $85,000 base + annual performance bonus
Employment:
Full time

You would be the one running this location, not just staffing it. The team is in place, the client base is loyal, and the reviews are excellent. What the business needs is an operator who owns the numbers and turns that goodwill into booked, rebooked, and enrolled revenue. Just as importantly, we need someone who knows how to build a culture people want to be part of, one where accountability, collaboration, continuous coaching, and exceptional patient care become the standard, not the exception.

This is a single-location med spa in the Farmington Valley corridor outside Hartford, backed by a multi-site operator who is present, invested, and hands-on. You would carry the location’s commercial results and lead a multidisciplinary team of licensed providers, aesthetic staff, and guest-experience staff. You would have direct access to ownership and real authority over how the location runs.

What You Will Do

  • Own the commercial result. Consultation-to-treatment conversion, rebooking, membership growth, and top-line revenue are yours to move and report on.
  • Lead with consistency and accountability. Establish a culture of ownership through daily huddles, coaching, performance feedback, and recognition. Set clear expectations and ensure the team executes them with excellence every day.
  • Grow the membership base. Build recurring revenue as a tracked, named-accountability motion rather than an occasional ask.
  • Run the location. Scheduling, inventory, vendor coordination, compliance administration, guest resolution, and working to the P&L.
  • Build and lead a high-performing culture. Create an environment where the team feels supported, challenged, and accountable. Celebrate wins, coach through opportunities, develop future leaders, and ensure every team member understands how their daily actions contribute to the success of the practice.

Requirements

What We Need

  • You have carried a number. You have owned the revenue result of a location, clinic, studio, or department, not only its schedule and inventory, and you can talk through a metric you personally moved and how you did it.
  • You have led people with real accountability. Hiring, coaching, setting standards, and addressing performance problems directly.
  • You have sold consultatively in a premium-service setting. Consultations, memberships, packages, or treatment plans, in aesthetics, wellness, premium fitness, spa, or a comparable environment.
  • You work to numbers comfortably. You can read a P&L, track the handful of measures that matter, and act on what they tell you.
  • You can be on site reliably in the Greater Hartford and Farmington Valley corridor.

Direct med spa, dermatology, or plastic surgery experience is a strong advantage, as is experience with a membership or recurring-revenue model, multi-site exposure, or familiarity with injectables and aesthetic device service menus. No clinical license is required for this role, and clinical decisions remain with the licensed providers and the medical director.

This Role Is Not a Fit If

  • You would rather inherit a team that already holds itself accountable, not build that rhythm yourself.
  • Performance conversations are uncomfortable for you, and you tend to let them slide rather than have them.
  • You want to own the schedule and the inventory, but not the revenue number.

Benefits

Schedule and Compensation

  • Base salary: $70,000 - $85,000 depending on experience.
  • Performance bonus: paid on the measures you control, including conversion, rebooking, membership growth, and revenue.
  • Schedule: Full time, on site, with some Saturday coverage.
  • Benefits: health contribution or stipend, paid time off, and a treatment allowance.

About the Opportunity

The operator behind this location runs other sites with top performance, so there is a proven playbook to work from and someone invested in your success rather than absent from it. The location itself is established, has an excellent service reputation with its clients, and has meaningful room on the commercial side. This is a confidential search. The employer will be disclosed to you before any interview with the client.
