How much do mechatronics student jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average hourly pay for mechatronics student in the United States is $27.68, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $30.29 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a mechatronics student?

Mechatronics students are individuals who study the interdisciplinary field combining mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and control systems. They learn how to design, build, and maintain intelligent systems and smart machines, such as robots and automated equipment. Mechatronics students typically gain hands-on experience in programming, electronics, and mechanical design, preparing them for careers in industries like manufacturing, automotive, robotics, and automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechatronics student, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mechatronics Student, you need a solid grasp of mathematics, physics, programming, and fundamental engineering principles, typically supported by coursework in mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, microcontrollers (such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi), and simulation tools is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving ability, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating on multidisciplinary projects. These competencies enable students to successfully design, analyze, and troubleshoot complex integrated systems, preparing them for future roles in mechatronics engineering.

What types of hands-on projects or team collaborations can a mechatronics student expect during internships or co-op placements?

Mechatronics Students often participate in diverse hands-on projects, such as designing and prototyping robotic systems, automating manufacturing processes, or integrating sensors and control systems. These assignments usually involve working closely with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers. Such collaborations help students develop practical skills, enhance their problem-solving abilities, and gain exposure to real-world engineering challenges. These experiences are invaluable for building a professional network and preparing for full-time roles after graduation.

What is the difference between Mechatronics Student vs Mechanical Engineering Intern?

AspectMechatronics StudentMechanical Engineering Intern
CredentialsEnrolled in Mechatronics or related engineering programEnrolled in Mechanical Engineering or related program
Work EnvironmentLabs, design projects, robotics labsManufacturing plants, design offices, testing facilities
Industry UsageRobotics, automation, embedded systemsMechanical systems, product design, manufacturing

Both roles involve engineering fundamentals, but Mechatronics Students focus on integrating electronics, control systems, and mechanical components, often working on robotics and automation projects. Mechanical Engineering Interns typically concentrate on mechanical design, thermodynamics, and manufacturing processes. The roles overlap in technical skills but differ in specialization and project focus.

Is it hard to get a job in mechatronics?

Getting a job in mechatronics can be competitive, but having a strong foundation in robotics, control systems, and programming, along with relevant internships or certifications, improves employability. Entry-level positions often require practical skills and knowledge of tools like CAD and PLCs, and continuous learning is important due to evolving technology.

Is mechatronics a useful degree?

A mechatronics degree prepares students for careers as mechatronics engineers, combining mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering skills. It is highly valued in industries such as robotics, automation, and manufacturing, offering diverse job opportunities and the potential for high earning potential. Proficiency in programming, control systems, and CAD tools enhances employability in this field.

What jobs can a mechatronics student get?

A mechatronics student can pursue roles such as robotics engineer, automation technician, control systems engineer, or maintenance engineer. These jobs typically require knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and software systems, and often involve working with CAD tools, PLCs, and embedded systems in manufacturing, robotics, or automation environments.

Job description

Cooperative Engineering Studies (KIS) | Dual Study Program Mechatronic Systems (B.Sc)

To strengthen the WSS team at the earliest possible date

WSS is looking for a prospective student (m/f/x) for the winter semester 2024/2025 who would like to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronic Systems at the Bochum University of Applied Sciences – Velbert/ Heiligenhaus campus as part of a dual study program and would have the opportunity for successful professional development in our company with WSS as a partner company accompanying their training. This combination of theory and practice is the recipe for success at Bochum University of Applied Sciences. In the dual Bachelor’s degree program, you will alternate between learning phases at Bochum University of Applied Sciences and practical phases in our company throughout the entire duration of your studies (standard period of study 9 semesters).

This is what you can expect during your practical phase at WSS:

  • You will learn how mechanical and electronic elements work together in practice and enable an optimized production process.
  • You will learn about different software tools and various measurement, control and regulation technologies.
  • You create concepts for (partially) automated processes and continuously develop these further as part of a team.
  • You are part of an automation team and accompany projects from the conception phase through to implementation.
What you bring with you:
  • Good technical understanding
  • Interest in mechatronic systems and control hardware and software
  • Enjoy math, physics and technology
  • High willingness to learn, analytical thinking and strong ability to work in a team
This is what we offer you:
  • Immediate integration into a team with a high level of loyalty to the company and a long period of employment.
  • Induction and further development programs tailored to you, with which we jointly lay the foundation for long-term cooperation beyond your studies.
  • Flexible working hours, taking into account your commitments at the university.
  • Variety of profitable practical experience to complement your studies – you will experience the different facets of the professional challenges you will face later in the company.
  • Support your own ideas with which you can contribute to improvements in production processes.
  • Numerous corporate benefits and events, including as part of award‑winning health management (health days, city cycling and e‑bike leasing, etc.).
  • Location in the heart of the key region near the cities of Düsseldorf, Essen and Wuppertal.

Interested? Then apply to us! Once you have decided on the Mechatronic Systems degree program, apply to us as a cooperation company with your complete application documents (please in pdf format) via bewerbung@wss.de. You can enrol at Bochum University of Applied Sciences from the beginning of May – you will receive a guaranteed place on presentation of an employment contract, provided the other admission requirements are met (www.hs-bochum.de/cvh-kooperativ).
