Job Description Summary & Additional Information
The Department of Aerospace Engineering in the Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland is searching for a Lecturer in the Mechatronics Engineering Program at the Universities of Shady Grove Campus. This is a full-time academic year appointment requiring
instruction of in-person lectures, laboratory experiences, and student competition teams.Mentorship of individual students on research projects is also encouraged. Summer support maybe provided for a suitable work activity if program funds are available.
The A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland serves as the catalyst for high-quality research, innovation, and learning, preparing our students to create innovations that will address the21st century Grand Challenges (e.g., energy, environment, security, and human health) and improve the human condition. The Clark School is dedicated to leading and transforming the engineering discipline and profession, to accelerating entrepreneurship, and to transforming research and learning activities into new innovations that benefit millions.
Duties will include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Teach 5-6 classes per academic year in the Mechatronics Engineering (ENMT) program at the Universities of Shady Grove. Teaching assignments will be provided by the Director of the USG Mechatronics Engineering Program. The expectation is that five of these courses will nominally be conventional courses taught as lectures or laboratories, and one class will nominally be curriculum development, advising, and other supporting activities (https://mechatronics.umd.edu/curriculum). Projected courses may include:

-ENMT-322 Discrete Signal Analysis
-ENMT-380 Introduction to Robotics
-ENMT-372 Robotic Systems
-ENMT-473 Motion Planning for Autonomous Systems
-ENMT-477 Machine Learning in Mechatronics Engineering
  • Support curriculum development in these assigned courses including development of lecture notes, homeworks, exams, and laboratory modules. The course materials for each class should be documented each semester and archived both in hard copy and electronically so that future instructors/lecturers can support teaching of these courses.
  • Administer assigned courses through elms.umd.edu, and make full use of the ELMS platform for grading, publishing lecture notes, homeworks, homework solutions, exams, etc. Complete grading in a timely fashion, especially final grades (expectation is that final grades are submitted within 48-72 hours following final exam).
  • Supporting ABET accreditation of the Mechatronics Engineering program by providing evaluation materials each semester at the direction of the program director.
  • Support continuous pedagogical improvement in the ENMT program.
  • Develop laboratory modules for courses in the program.
  • Provide advisement to students in the program concerning progress in curriculum
  • Be an effective mentor to the students in the ENMT program
  • Support recruiting initiatives for the ENMT program

Minimum Qualification: Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in aerospace, mechanical or electrical engineering or a closely related discipline, and experience in teaching at the college/university level in the field of mechatronics and/or robotics.
