Laborer (Mechanical)

The purpose of this role is to clean and service (sand and fuel locomotives) and perform general labor and cleanup duties within and around the maintenance facilities.

Minimum Knowledge and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Skills:

  • Communicates successfully with a variety of disciplines and levels, both internal and external staff
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers
  • Possesses excellent verbal and written skills
  • Basic computer and networking skills

Key Accountabilities (Essential Job Duties):

  • Demonstrates understanding and adheres to the KCS principles of Employee Engagement, Operational Excellence, Safety & Security, and Economic Performance
  • Completes all work in compliance with FRA, MBTA and Keolis Commuter Services standards
  • Cleans shop facilities, locomotive interiors, engine, and HEP rooms, exteriors, and cabs
  • Sands, fuels, and stocks locomotives
  • Distributes materials to work sites
  • Removes and/or refuses some hazardous materials
  • Operates floor sweeping equipment, forklifts, heavy equipment, on rail equipment, tractors, and motor vehicles
  • Complies with all related safety rules and procedures and reports all hazards as required
  • Climbs vertical surfaces to a height of approximately twelve (12) feet and stands on flat surfaces using a fall arrest system
  • Documents job tasks or work performed manually or electronically and submits as required
  • Attends and participates in all assigned training, specifically safety and security related
  • Completes other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • A valid driver’s license is required to successfully travel throughout the Commuter Rail network and locations as assigned
  • Travels and works at all Commuter Rail locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island in all weather conditions

Working Conditions (including Physical Demands):

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to pick up items weighing approximately 50 pounds on a single lift regularly
  • Work involves walking, climbing on rail equipment and ladders
  • Requires use of both hands to push/pull, lift, handle, feel and/ or reach
  • Works in confined spaces
  • Ability to perform all duties mentioned above

Working Conditions:

  • Noise Level - Moderate
  • Shift Work-Be able to work all shifts, all days
  • Travel-Able to travel to various facilities
  • On-call-As per Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Teamwork - Work as part of the Mechanical team
  • Must remain in the department for one year before eligible to apply for other jobs within the company
  • Other-This is a unionized position
