A mechanical project manager coordinates activities on a mechanical construction project. As a mechanical project manager, you monitor the status of a project to ensure that it stays on schedule. You also make sure that the project is in compliance with all safety, labor, and zoning regulations. You typically spend less time on a work site than a construction manager and handle administrative duties such as budgeting and managing agreements with subcontractors. You may need a bachelor’s degree in engineering, building science, or a related field, but an associate degree and ample experience are often enough. Certification from the American Institute of Constructors or Construction Management Association of America is desirable.
| Aspect | Mechanical Project Manager | Mechanical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Responsibilities | Oversees entire projects, manages teams, coordinates schedules, and ensures project delivery | Designs, develops, and tests mechanical systems and components |
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, PMP certification often preferred | Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering |
| Work Environment | Construction sites, manufacturing plants, project offices | Design offices, laboratories, manufacturing facilities |
| Industry Usage | Construction, manufacturing, energy projects | Product design, R&D, manufacturing |
The main difference is that Mechanical Project Managers focus on overseeing entire projects, coordinating teams, and ensuring timely delivery, while Mechanical Engineers concentrate on designing and developing mechanical systems. Both roles require a background in mechanical engineering, but their daily tasks and responsibilities differ significantly.

The Engineering Project Manager (EPM) is the engineering team's primary interface with the rest of the business and owns engineering execution across all active projects. This role manages design scope, sprint planning, engineering capacity, and cross-discipline coordination while serving as the key decision point between Project Management requests and engineering delivery.
Reporting to the Engineering Integration Manager, the EPM balances customer commitments with engineering capacity and priorities. This position protects engineering teams from unplanned work, owns BOM milestone accountability, and represents Engineering in cross-functional planning and scheduling discussions.
The EPM works closely with the Engineering Coordinator to maintain sprint health and project tracking accuracy and partners with the Systems Team to ensure pre-PO requirements and project setup are incorporated into engineering planning from project initiation.

Key ResponsibilitiesOwn engineering execution across all active projects, including design scope, sprint planning, capacity, and Electrical/Mechanical coordination.
Represent Engineering in cross-functional planning and scheduling meetings; communicate commitments, identify capacity risks, and protect sprint scope.
Manage engineering work-request intake by triaging PM requests, confirming sprint availability, identifying backlog status, and communicating outcomes.
Establish sprint scope in coordination with Scheduling while maintaining Engineering's priority authority.
Enforce sprint capacity governance by locking committed work before each sprint, protecting capacity from mid-sprint scope changes, and routing escalations when necessary.
Own BOM milestone accountability at defined design gates and proactively identify risks that could affect project delivery.
Provide engineering commitment dates to Operations and Scheduling, maintain date accuracy, and communicate changes proactively.
Serve as the primary routing point between Operations and Engineering for status and scope requests.
Coordinate cross-discipline deliverables between Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, including shared milestones, submittal packages, and design dependencies.
Assess technical scope impacts for change orders and work with engineers to determine design impacts before commercial terms are established.
Identify, track, and communicate technical risks; escalate issues when they exceed Engineering's capacity to resolve within the sprint.
Partner with the Systems Team to ensure pre-PO stakeholder requirements and project setup are complete before engineering execution begins.
Identify projects entering execution without adequate front-end definition and communicate gaps.
Partner with the Engineering Coordinator on sprint ceremonies, board accuracy, and capacity visibility.
Develop and maintain EPM processes, including intake workflows, escalation criteria, sprint governance, and milestone tracking.
Drive continuous improvement of engineering execution and project management processes.

Knowledge and Experience Requirements
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Project Management, or a related technical field.
4+ years of experience in engineering project management, engineering coordination, or technical project management within a manufacturing or Engineer-to-Order (ETO) environment.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent engineering projects under schedule pressure while maintaining accountability and delivery.
Working knowledge of sprint-based engineering execution, including capacity planning, milestone tracking, scope management, and sprint governance.
Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with engineers, Project Managers, Operations leaders, and customers.
Ability to communicate and maintain clear positions when managing competing priorities or schedule pressure.
Experience managing the interface between Engineering and commercial teams, including scope assessment, change-order impact, and technical risk communication.
___________________________________________________________
Preferred QualificationsPMP, PMP-ACP, CSM, or equivalent project management or Agile certification.
Experience in an ETO or custom electrical equipment manufacturing environment.
Familiarity with switchgear, E-Houses, PDCs, MCCs, VFD panels, or similar custom electrical assemblies.
Experience with PLM, PDM, or ERP systems in an engineering release or BOM management environment.
Functional understanding of applicable electrical equipment standards and codes.
Experience with pre-PO or front-end requirements processes, systems engineering, stakeholder requirements, or similar processes.
