How much do mechanical pe jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 5, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanical pe in the United States is $102,878.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $81,500.00 and $126,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a mechanical PE?

A Mechanical PE is a licensed Professional Engineer who specializes in mechanical engineering. To become a Mechanical PE, one must earn an engineering degree, gain relevant work experience, and pass both the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exams. Mechanical PEs are qualified to design, develop, and oversee mechanical systems and are often required for projects that need a licensed engineer's approval. Their responsibilities can include HVAC system design, thermal systems analysis, and ensuring projects comply with safety and regulatory standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical PE, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Professional Engineer (PE), you need a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and a PE license, typically earned after passing the FE and PE exams and gaining relevant experience. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools (such as ANSYS or SolidWorks), and familiarity with industry codes and standards are essential. Excellent project management, teamwork, and communication skills set standout Mechanical PEs apart. These qualifications and skills are vital to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant engineering solutions in complex projects.

What are some common challenges mechanical PEs face when managing multidisciplinary engineering projects?

Mechanical Professional Engineers (PEs) often work on projects that require collaboration with electrical, civil, and structural engineers. One of the main challenges is ensuring clear communication and coordination among teams to prevent design conflicts and project delays. Mechanical PEs must also balance technical requirements with budget and schedule constraints, often requiring creative problem-solving. Staying up-to-date with industry codes, standards, and emerging technologies is essential to maintain compliance and deliver effective solutions.

What is the difference between Mechanical Pe and Mechanical Engineer?

AspectMechanical PeMechanical Engineer
CredentialsRequires PE license, degree, work experience, examDegree in mechanical engineering, may pursue PE license
Work EnvironmentDesign, review, and approve projects; sign off on plansDesign, analysis, and development; often in design teams
Industry UsageUsed in consulting, government, and project approval rolesCommon in manufacturing, design firms, and R&D

The main difference between a Mechanical Pe and a Mechanical Engineer is that the Mechanical Pe has obtained a Professional Engineer license, allowing them to sign off on projects and provide official approvals. Mechanical Engineers typically hold a degree and work in design and analysis, but do not have licensing authority unless they become licensed PEs. Both roles are integral in the mechanical industry, but the PE credential distinguishes the Mechanical Pe as a licensed professional capable of signing and sealing engineering documents.

Is it worth getting a professional engineer license as a mechanical engineer?

For mechanical engineers, obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) license can enhance career advancement, increase earning potential, and allow for independent practice and signing off on projects. Licensing typically requires a degree, work experience, and passing the PE exam, and it is often valued in consulting, management, and roles with regulatory responsibilities.
