What is a mechanical engineer?

Mechanical Engineers are professionals who design, develop, build, and test mechanical and thermal devices, including tools, engines, and machines. They work in a variety of industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy. Their responsibilities often include problem-solving, conducting research, and improving existing technologies to optimize performance and efficiency. Mechanical engineers use principles of physics, mathematics, and material science to ensure systems and products function safely and effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis tools, and relevant industry certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help mechanical engineers excel in multi-disciplinary project environments. These competencies ensure that engineers can design, analyze, and implement effective solutions to complex mechanical challenges safely and efficiently.

What are some common challenges mechanical engineers face when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Mechanical engineers often collaborate with professionals from electrical, software, and civil engineering backgrounds on complex projects. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication and understanding of technical requirements across disciplines, which can prevent design conflicts and integration issues. Adapting to diverse project management styles and aligning timelines can also be demanding. However, these multidisciplinary teams offer valuable learning opportunities and help mechanical engineers develop strong problem-solving and collaboration skills essential for career advancement.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineers vs Electrical Engineers?

AspectMechanical EngineersElectrical Engineers
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, PE license (optional)Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, PE license (optional)
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, HVACPower systems, electronics, telecommunications, automation
Industry UsageDesigning mechanical systems, thermal systems, roboticsDesigning electrical circuits, power distribution, control systems

Mechanical Engineers and Electrical Engineers often work in overlapping industries like manufacturing and automation. While Mechanical Engineers focus on mechanical systems and thermal processes, Electrical Engineers specialize in electrical systems and circuitry. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but their work environments and technical focus differ significantly.

What type of work do mechanical engineers do?

Mechanical engineers design, develop, and test mechanical devices and systems such as engines, machines, and tools. They often work in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, or energy industries, using skills in CAD software, physics, and materials science to solve engineering problems. Their work may involve analyzing prototypes, improving product performance, and ensuring safety standards.

These roles are ideal for professionals who enjoy owning their work, collaborating across disciplines, and contributing to projects that make a tangible impact in industrial and facility environments.

At Eichleay, you’ll work alongside a multidisciplinary team supporting both new construction and complex retrofit/expansion projects, where your ability to problem-solve, adapt, and deliver practical engineering solutions is highly valued.

Our Mechanical team designs and delivers systems across industrial, facility, and utility environments. This includes supporting piping systems, equipment layouts, HVAC, and process support systems, focused on reliability, efficiency, and long-term performance.

Employment Type: Full-Time

Compensation and Benefits: We offer full-time employees’ competitive compensation and benefits that include Medical/Dental/Vision, HSA company contribution, company 401K match, and more.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in Refining, Chemicals, Power, Life Sciences, Food & Beverage, or related industrial industries

General Core Responsibilities (may vary based on position)

  • Demonstrate awareness and commitment to health, safety and environmental issues. Address issues as necessary to ensure zero harm to all employees, clients, and contractors with zero environmental incidents.
  • Consistently achieve goals, delivering quality and accurate work while meeting project schedules, including reviewing project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
  • Support development of mechanical engineering, drawing, and construction work packages for review and approval.
  • Develop mechanical system designs including piping systems, equipment layouts, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and rotating equipment.
  • Develop facility and utility mechanical systems including HVAC, ventilation, pressurization, and environmental control systems supporting industrial and facility environments.
  • Perform mechanical calculations such as pipe stress, hydraulic calculations, equipment sizing, fluid flow, and thermal system evaluations, independently or with guidance from more experienced engineering staff.
  • Perform scope development and create technical specifications for mechanical equipment and modifications.
  • Prepare material requisitions for bid and technical bid evaluations, review vendor submittals, and respond to construction RFIs.
  • Provide man-hour estimates and material quantity takeoffs to support proposals and cost estimates.
  • Attend and participate in Client and Eichleay project team meetings. May require in-person interactions including site visits.
  • Maintain schedule and budget commitments.
