Position Summary
Griffon Aerospace is seeking Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Interns to join our engineering team in Madison, Alabama. This internship offers hands-on experience with UAV structural design, fabrication, testing, and integration in a real-world aerospace and defense environment. This is a flexible part-time position that can accommodate either full-time work during summer/semester breaks or part-time work while classes are in session. The ideal candidate will be a rising junior or senior with strong mechanical or aerospace engineering fundamentals, practical hands-on skills, and a passion for unmanned aerial vehicle technology. Hard-working, productive freshmen and sophomores with demonstrated hands-on experience will also be considered.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Assist with mechanical and structural design, analysis, and testing for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
  • Support fabrication activities including 3D printing, composite layups, and assembly operations
  • Participate in prototype development and hands-on building of UAV airframes and components
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, drawings, and technical documentation
  • Assist with mechanical testing and validation of prototype systems
  • Support system integration activities and fit checks
  • Conduct engineering analysis and trade studies under guidance of senior engineers
  • Collaborate with engineers and technicians on various development projects
  • Participate in design reviews and team meetings
  • Learn and apply aerospace industry standards and best practices
  • Assist with preparation of technical reports and presentations
  • Support manufacturing process development and improvement initiatives

Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • Strong academic performance with solid understanding of mechanical/aerospace engineering fundamentals
  • Experience with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, CATIA, NX, or similar)
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication, prototyping, or manufacturing processes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Self-motivated with eagerness to learn and contribute
  • Must be a U.S. Person as defined by ITAR regulations and able to access ITAR and CUI (Controlled Unclassified Information)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with composite materials fabrication (layups, vacuum bagging, curing processes)
  • Hands-on experience with CNC machining operations and G-code programming
  • Proficiency with 3D printing technologies and design for additive manufacturing
  • Coursework or projects in aircraft structures, aerodynamics, or flight mechanics
  • Experience with FEA tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or Nastran
  • Participation in robotics competitions, UAV projects, Design-Build-Fly, or related extracurricular activities
  • Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
  • Experience with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Coursework in statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, and thermodynamics

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work at a desk, bench, or shop floor for extended periods
  • Capable of lifting and handling components, tooling, and assemblies (up to 50 lbs)
  • Comfortable working in a shop/lab environment with appropriate PPE

Work Environment and Schedule
  • Part-time position in Madison, Alabama with flexible scheduling options:
    • 15-25 hours/week while classes are in session
    • Option for Full-time (40 hours/week) during summer break or semester breaks
  • Work will be performed in engineering laboratory, production integration floor and office environments
  • Schedule flexible to accommodate academic commitments
  • Duration: Semester-long or summer internships available
