The opportunity

As a Mechanical Engineer at Radical AI, you will design and build novel robotic and autonomous systems for a self-driving laboratory pioneering material science research and discovery. You will own the physical manifestation of our technology: defining requirements and executing 3D design, prototyping, validation, and installation. You will solve complex challenges in material handling, precision motion control, and the automation of state-of-the-art lab equipment. You will lead projects from concept to completion, using rapid prototyping and low-volume manufacturing, with designs that align with the Radical brand and interface seamlessly with peripheral systems..The work rewards organization, attention to detail, and craftsmanship as much as raw design speed โ€” that discipline, paired with a collaborative team willing to tackle hard, ambiguous problems, is what lets us move from concept to working hardware fast.

What You'll Do
  • Design solutions for complex material handling and laboratory automation challenges.
  • Communicate technical designs clearly to technical and non-technical audiences using 2D and 3D visualization.
  • Develop complex CAD assemblies to solve automation challenges.
  • Rapidly prototype designs and coordinate with vendors for fabrication and system integration.
What We're Looking ForRequired
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of industry experience in part, mechanism, and large assembly design.
  • Expert proficiency in SOLIDWORKSโ€”speed is crucial.
  • Expertise in DFM and rapid prototyping (CNC, sheet metal, 3D printing).
  • Proven success in delivering novel mechanism and machine designs.
  • Strong hands-on fabrication and assembly skills.
  • Dauntless in attacking hard and ambiguous problems. Everything is impossible until it's not.
Nice to Have
  • Background in industrial automation and equipment design.
  • Exposure to material handling systems (AMRs, ASRS, conveyance).
  • Experience using or managing Solidworks PDM systems.
  • Experience in automation workcells utilizing 6DOF arms.
  • Familiarity with laboratory tools or building in a lab environment.
Work Arrangement

On-site at our Brooklyn Navy Yard lab. This role is hands-on with physical hardware and is not remote-eligible.

Compensation

$140,000 - $185,000. Compensation varies based on experience and scope. We offer 100% employer-covered medical, dental, and vision insurance, unlimited PTO, 14+ company holidays, 401(k), and mental health support through Spring Health and Headspace Care.

Portfolio or work samples required for your application to be considered.
