What is a mechanical engineering apprentice?

A Mechanical Engineering Apprentice job is an entry-level role where individuals gain hands-on experience while learning the principles of mechanical engineering. Apprentices typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, assisting with tasks like designing, testing, and maintaining mechanical systems. They also participate in classroom-based learning to develop technical knowledge in areas such as materials science, thermodynamics, and computer-aided design (CAD). This combination of practical and theoretical training helps prepare them for a career as a fully qualified mechanical engineer.

What does a mechanical engineering apprentice do?

As a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice, your day-to-day responsibilities often include assisting engineers with drafting designs, performing calculations, maintaining equipment, and supporting the assembly or testing of mechanical components. You may also attend team meetings, participate in hands-on projects, and document your work for review by supervisors. Working closely with senior engineers and technicians provides valuable learning opportunities and mentorship. The role combines both office and workshop tasks, giving you practical experience that supports your professional development and prepares you for more advanced positions in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineering apprentice?

Minneapolis, MN • On-site

Full-time

Posted 4 days ago

Job description

Description
The E&M (Engineering and Mechanical) Technician is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, reassembly, and testing of rotating electrical equipment, including AC/DC motors, generators, alternators, and related industrial rotating apparatus. This role supports both shop-based and field service work on equipment ranging from fractional horsepower motors to large hydroelectric generators and industrial synchronous machines. The technician applies mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical skills to restore equipment to OEM or better-than-OEM condition while adhering to industry standards, quality plans, and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform incoming inspections, condition assessments, and failure analysis on motors, generators, rotors, stators, bearings, shafts, and associated components.
• Disassemble, clean, inspect, and document equipment condition using established checklists and ITPs (Inspection & Test Plans).
• Execute mechanical repairs including reassembly, bearing replacement, balancing, and final mechanical testing
• Interpret engineering drawings, winding data, nameplate information, and technical specifications to determine repair scope and methods.
• Perform precision measurements, fits, clearances, and geometric checks using micrometers, dial indicators, laser alignment tools, and other precision metrology equipment.
• Document all work thoroughly, including as-found/as-left conditions, materials used, test results, and deviations; support preparation of repair reports and customer documentation.
• Follow quality assurance procedures, material specifications, and applicable standards (e.g., IEEE, EASA, NEMA, manufacturer guidelines).
• Maintain a clean, organized work area and properly care for specialized tools, test equipment, and lifting devices.
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other technicians on complex or large-scale projects (including hydro generator stator/rotor work).
• Adhere to all safety protocols, lockout/tagout, confined space, and environmental requirements.
Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent; technical school, apprenticeship, or military training in electromechanical systems preferred.
• 3+ years of hands-on experience in rotating electrical apparatus repair, motor/generator service, or industrial electromechanical maintenance.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated skill in disassembly, inspection, repair, and reassembly of precision rotating equipment.
• Working knowledge of AC/DC motors, synchronous generators, induction machines, and basic winding principles.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical manuals.
• Proficiency with common shop tools, measuring instruments, and basic test equipment.
• Understanding of insulation systems, bearings, lubrication, balancing, and vibration fundamentals.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in both shop and field environments.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel for field service as required.
• Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs, work in awkward positions, climb ladders, and stand for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with hydroelectric generators, large industrial motors, or synchronous machine rewinds and refurbishments.
• Familiarity with VPI processes, form-wound coils, edge-wound field coils, core testing (EL CID or equivalent), and high-voltage insulation systems.
• Knowledge of balancing (static/dynamic), laser alignment, and vibration analysis.
• Experience with precision measurement and metrology tools to include Polyworks & AutoCAD.
• Experience with quality documentation, ITPs, and formal inspection/test processes.
• Basic welding, machining, or fabrication skills.
• Forklift, overhead crane, or rigging certification.
Work Environment
Primarily shop-based with occasional field service at customer sites (industrial plants, power generation facilities, utilities). Work may involve exposure to noise, solvents, resins, and industrial environments. Overtime and occasional weekend or travel work may be required based on project demands.
This position is ideal for a detail-oriented technician who takes pride in restoring critical rotating equipment to high reliability standards and who thrives in a hands-on, technically challenging environment.
