What does a mechanical engineer do?

A Mechanical Engineer designs, develops, builds, and tests mechanical devices such as engines, machines, and tools. They use principles of physics and mathematics to solve engineering problems and improve existing products. Mechanical Engineers can work in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy. Their responsibilities often include creating blueprints, analyzing data, and collaborating with other engineers or professionals to ensure projects meet safety and quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical design, mathematics, and physics, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis tools, and familiarity with industry standards or relevant certifications (like a Professional Engineer license) are common requirements. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in collaborative and multidisciplinary environments. These skills are crucial for ensuring safe, innovative, and efficient engineering solutions that meet project and client needs.

What are common interdisciplinary collaborations for mechanical engineers in a typical project setting?

Mechanical Engineers often work closely with professionals from other disciplines such as electrical engineers, software developers, and industrial designers, especially when developing complex products or machinery. Collaboration is essential for integrating mechanical systems with electronics and software, ensuring functionality, safety, and efficiency. These interactions usually involve regular team meetings, joint problem-solving sessions, and coordinated testing to achieve project goals. Being comfortable working in cross-functional teams can significantly enhance your success and contribute to innovative solutions.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Designer?

AspectMechanical EngineerMechanical Designer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, PE license (optional)Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Design, CAD certifications (often)
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, testing, project managementCreating detailed CAD models, drafting, and design documentation
Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, aerospace, automotiveProduct design, manufacturing, industrial equipment

Mechanical Engineers focus on designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems, often overseeing projects from conception to completion. Mechanical Designers primarily create detailed CAD models and drawings based on specifications. While both roles require technical skills and knowledge of mechanical systems, Mechanical Engineers typically have broader responsibilities including analysis and project management, whereas Mechanical Designers specialize in detailed design work.

What type of jobs do mechanical engineers do?

Mechanical engineers design, develop, and test mechanical devices and systems such as engines, HVAC systems, manufacturing equipment, and robotics. They often work in industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, and manufacturing, utilizing skills in CAD software, thermodynamics, and materials science. Their roles may involve research, project management, and ensuring safety and efficiency standards are met.

Job description

Join the team that keeps aircraft flying smart and safe.

At LMS we donโ€™t just design aerospace fuel management systems, we engineer precision, reliability, and innovation into every drop. As a Mechanical Engineer, youโ€™ll help us fuel system components for some of the worldโ€™s leading aerospace programs. Weโ€™re looking for an experienced problem-solver who thrives on complexity, collaboration, and creativity, someone who can see a drawing not just as lines on a page, but as the blueprint for flight success.

Job Overview

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading the design and creation of detailed drawings for aerospace fuel system components and assemblies, and serves as a technical leader for multidisciplinary teams, guiding the design, release, and qualification of aerospace fuel system components with minimal oversight.

What Youโ€™ll Do Design & Development
  • Design, analyze, and refine mechanical components and assemblies for aerospace fuel systems while meeting customer, industry, and regulatory requirements.
  • Create detailed drawings, models, and engineering documentation for complex systems.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with electrical, quality, and manufacturing engineers to transition designs from concept to production.
  • Provide design authority feedback to support manufacturing and resolve technical challenges.
Testing & Qualification
  • Prepare, coordinate, and execute external qualification testing (e.g., DO-160).
  • Analyze test results, prepare technical reports, and communicate findings to stakeholders.
Customer & Supplier Engagement
  • Engage directly with customers, suppliers, and test facilities to ensure product performance and alignment with expectations.
Continuous Improvement & Leadership
  • Contribute to process improvements and new product development initiatives.
  • Offer guidance and mentorship to team members as needed.
  • Manage tasks proactively and deliver high-quality results in a dynamic environment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in mechanical engineering & 3 + years of relevant experience, or Associateโ€™s degree in engineering & 6 + years of relevant design experience.
  • Strong proficiency with SolidWorks preferred, other modeling programs considered.
  • Knowledge and application of GD&T standards (ASME Y14.5).
  • Understanding of ISO 9001 and AS9100 quality standards.
  • Ability to read, write, analyze, and interpret complex technical documentation.
  • Experience developing prototypes using best practices and new technology.
  • Ability to travel independently up to a few times a year.
Above and Beyond
  • Experience in the Aerospace and Defense industries.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems and assembly of electromechanical systems.
  • Experience using machining equipment.
  • DO 160G experience.
  • Knowledge of design, analysis, and fabrication of composites.
