How much do mechanical design engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 22, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanical design engineering in the United States is $91,578.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $76,000.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is mechanical design engineering?

Mechanical design engineering is a branch of engineering focused on designing, analyzing, and developing mechanical systems and products. Mechanical design engineers use principles of physics, mathematics, and material science to create everything from small individual parts to large-scale machinery. Their work often involves using computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed models and prototypes before manufacturing. This discipline is essential in industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and consumer electronics, ensuring that products are efficient, reliable, and cost-effective.

What are some of the common challenges Mechanical Design Engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Mechanical Design Engineers often collaborate with electrical engineers, manufacturing teams, and project managers. One common challenge is ensuring that the mechanical design aligns with electrical requirements and manufacturability constraints, which can require frequent communication and compromise. Balancing innovative ideas with practical limitations such as budget, materials, and timelines is also a recurring challenge. Successful engineers develop strong problem-solving skills and adaptability to navigate these multidisciplinary interactions effectively.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior mechanical design engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in CAD software, and specialized knowledge in industries like aerospace, automotive, or energy can earn $300,000 or more annually. High-level roles often require advanced degrees, leadership responsibilities, and a strong track record of project success.

What is the work of mechanical design engineer?

A mechanical design engineer develops, analyzes, and tests mechanical devices and systems, such as engines, machinery, and tools. They use CAD software to create detailed drawings and often collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are feasible and meet specifications. Strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes are essential in this role.

Can I make 200k as a mechanical engineer?

Earning a $200,000 salary as a mechanical design engineer is possible but typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills, and working in high-paying industries such as aerospace, automotive, or energy. Senior-level engineers with specialized expertise, management responsibilities, or working in certain geographic regions are more likely to reach this salary level.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, proficiency in CAD software, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of industry standards and certifications like FE or PE, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, effective communication, and teamwork are essential soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills ensure innovative, safe, and efficient design solutions that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Engineering vs Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering?

AspectMechanical Design EngineeringMechanical Manufacturing Engineering
Primary FocusDesign and development of mechanical components and systemsManufacturing processes, production efficiency, and quality control
Skills & CertificationsCAD software, engineering principles, often requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineeringManufacturing methods, quality assurance, often requires a bachelor's in mechanical or manufacturing engineering
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, labs, CAD workstationsFactories, production lines, manufacturing plants
Industry UsageProduct design, R&D, prototypingMass production, assembly, process optimization

Mechanical Design Engineering focuses on creating and developing mechanical systems and components, while Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering emphasizes the production, process improvement, and quality control of those designs. Both roles require a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles and often collaborate closely in product development cycles.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced mechanical design engineers working in specialized industries such as aerospace, defense, or advanced manufacturing can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually, especially with senior roles, bonuses, and stock options. Achieving this level typically requires advanced skills, extensive experience, and often leadership responsibilities or working in high-cost-of-living regions.

Job description

Who We AreWho You Are

Cambridge Design Partnership is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer II to join our growing US team.

This role is suited to an early-career engineer with around 2-5 years of relevant experience who is ready to take ownership of defined engineering workstreams, contribute to multidisciplinary product development projects, and continue building the skills needed to become a rounded product development consultant.

You will work across sectors including medtech, life sciences, drug delivery and consumer. Projects may span early concept generation, prototyping, engineering development, testing, design for manufacture, and transfer into production.

We are looking for someone who can combine strong mechanical design fundamentals with practical hands-on engineering, clear communication, and the ability to work well with clients and multidisciplinary teams. Regular on-site presence is required, with a minimum expectation of three days per week in the office.

What You'll Do
  • Develop mechanical design solutions for new products, subsystems, mechanisms, assemblies, test rigs, and prototypes.
  • Create robust 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, tolerance schemes, and technical documentation.
  • Apply sound engineering judgement to balance performance, usability, manufacturability, reliability, cost, and schedule.
  • Support concept development, feasibility studies, prototyping, design iteration, and engineering verification activities.
  • Apply DFM/DFA principles to develop practical designs that can be manufactured, assembled, tested, and scaled.
  • Contribute to the selection of materials, components, manufacturing processes, and suppliers.
  • Identify and resolve technical issues through analysis, prototyping, testing, and structured problem solving.

Project Contribution and Ownership

  • Take ownership of defined work packages within larger product development programs.
  • Plan and manage your own workload, communicate progress clearly, and flag risks or issues early.
  • Support project documentation, design reviews, risk management activities, and technical decision-making.

Prototyping, Testing, and Build Support

  • Support hands-on prototype builds, test setup, troubleshooting, and design iteration.
  • Develop practical test fixtures, assembly aids, and experimental rigs where needed.
  • Capture test results, summarize findings, and use evidence to guide design decisions.
  • Work with internal workshops, external suppliers, and manufacturing partners to produce parts and assemblies.

Client and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Support sales efforts by writing proposals, defining budgets, and scoping work packages.
  • Communicate technical work clearly to internal teams and, where appropriate, external clients.
  • Present design concepts, engineering rationale, test findings, and recommendations in a clear and professional way.
  • Build confidence in working directly with clients while being supported by more senior team members.
What You Bring

Experience and Education

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Typically 2-5 years of relevant experience in product development, mechanical design, engineering consultancy, medical devices, or a related field.
