What does a mechanical design analysis engineer do?

A Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer is responsible for designing and analyzing mechanical components and systems to ensure they meet performance, safety, and reliability standards. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and simulation tools to model and test designs under various conditions. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, reviewing technical drawings, and optimizing designs to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Additionally, they may be involved in prototype testing and troubleshooting to resolve any design issues before manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical design analysis engineer?

To thrive as a Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in design and analysis methodologies, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis (FEA) tools, and relevant industry codes or certifications (like PE licensure) is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting technical findings. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, efficient products and effective resolution of design challenges.

How does a mechanical design analysis engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product development cycle?

Mechanical Design Analysis Engineers often work closely with product designers, manufacturing engineers, and quality assurance teams throughout the product development process. They provide critical analysis and simulation data to help refine designs, ensure manufacturability, and verify that products meet safety and performance standards. Regular meetings, design reviews, and collaborative problem-solving sessions are common, allowing for real-time feedback and iterative improvements. This collaborative environment ensures that the final product is optimized from both a design and engineering perspective.

What is the difference between Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Design Analysis EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusAnalyzing mechanical systems for performance, stress, and durabilityCreating and developing mechanical components and assemblies
Skills & CertificationsFEM, CAD, analytical tools, engineering degreesCAD, design software, engineering degrees
Work EnvironmentDesign validation labs, simulation software, R&D teamsDesign offices, manufacturing plants, prototyping labs
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, manufacturing, R&DProduct development, manufacturing, engineering firms

Both roles require engineering degrees and CAD skills, but the Mechanical Design Analysis Engineer specializes in evaluating and testing mechanical systems through analysis, while the Mechanical Design Engineer focuses on creating and developing new mechanical designs.

Job description

About the Role:

TeraWulf is building large-scale AI/HPC data centers, and the Mechanical Engineer will serve as an owner-side technical resource for mechanical design, tenant requirements, standards, and project execution.

The role supports mechanical systems across data center projects, including chilled water plants, heat rejection, pumping systems, airside systems, liquid cooling infrastructure, CDUs, RDHx, CRAHs, fan walls, controls interfaces, and mechanical redundancy. The position works closely with external engineers, contractors, vendors, commissioning agents, operations teams, and tenant-facing commercial teams.

Responsibilities

· Support development of mechanical design standards, basis-of-design documents, specifications, reference architectures, and repeatable project templates.

· Review mechanical designs for capacity, redundancy, reliability, maintainability, energy efficiency, constructability, cost, schedule, and operational alignment.

· Evaluate mechanical systems, equipment, vendors, and technologies, including central plant equipment, modular mechanical systems, liquid cooling infrastructure, CDUs, RDHx, CRAHs, fan walls, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, filtration, humidification, water treatment, and heat rejection systems.

· Support procurement and vendor due diligence through equipment comparisons, submittal reviews, factory acceptance testing, manufacturing quality reviews, and long-lead equipment coordination.

· Translate tenant mechanical requirements into design criteria, scope demarcations, interface requirements, lease support language, and implementation plans.

· Evaluate tenant requests related to rack density, cooling allocation, liquid cooling, CDU interfaces, RDHx, environmental criteria, redundancy, controls, commissioning, filtration, humidity control, and deployment phasing.

· Help determine whether requested mechanical work belongs in Landlord base build, tenant fit-out, tenant equipment scope, or separately priced scope.

· Review mechanical drawings, specifications, RFIs, submittals, equipment schedules, sequences of operation, design changes, commissioning plans, test scripts, and turnover documentation.

· Identify design gaps, unclear demarcations, constructability issues, operational concerns, and cost or schedule risks; help drive issues to resolution.

· Participate in site walks, punch list reviews, commissioning activities, issue tracking, and construction-to-operations handoff.

· Maintain clear technical documentation, including review comments, decision logs, risk assessments, scope matrices, and design change evaluations.

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline.

· 5–8 years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, including design, construction, commissioning, or owner-side technical oversight.

· Experience with data centers, mission-critical facilities, central utility plants, industrial cooling systems, or large-scale commercial MEP projects strongly preferred.

· Experience with liquid cooling, CDUs, RDHx, high-density rack environments, chilled water plants, or AI/HPC deployments strongly preferred.

· Experience reviewing drawings, specifications, submittals, RFIs, control sequences, commissioning plans, and equipment documentation.

· Ability to coordinate with engineers, vendors, contractors, commissioning agents, operations teams, commercial teams, and tenants.

· Working knowledge of relevant IBC, IMC, ASHRAE, NFPA, and data center design guidance.

· Proficiency with Bluebeam, Procore or equivalent, AutoCAD/Revit read-level fluency, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace.

· PE license or EIT certification a plus but not required.

· Willingness to travel up to 25%.
