Purpose:
The Mechanic performs a variety of activities designed to service, repair and maintain Geophysical Vibroseis equipment, road trucks and other field vehicles/equipment, in order to maintain readiness for production and in compliance with Department of Transportation regulations.
Summary of Essential Job Functions:
  • Diagnose and repair various pieces of heavy equipment, including but not limited to vibroseis vehicles (vibes), diesel trucks and generators, rough terrain vehicles (RTV's) and passenger vans. The following are examples of what systems the Mechanic will have to maintain/repair:
  • Brakes (Air), Cooling, Drive, Electrical, Exhaust and Emissions Control, Heating and Air Conditioning, Hydraulic pumps, Air, Steering and Suspension, Transmissions (manual and automatic) and Coupling Devices

  • Perform inspections and preventative maintenance on all vehicles and equipment
  • Perform Annual Certificate of Inspections
  • Ensure safety equipment is appropriately assigned to each type of vehicle ie Reflective triangles, fire extinguishers, fire paddles etc
  • Prepare work orders, and maintains records of maintenance/service logs
  • Maintain/use spill containment equipment to reduce environmental impact
  • Retain and submit receipts to Accounting Dept.
  • Keep tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.
  • Complete any and all other tasks assigned by Recording Crew Manager and follow any other directions given by Senior Observer/Observer and HSE Manager

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Minimum 1 years' experience diagnostic/repair/maintenance on general hydraulic systems
  • Valid Driver's License (CDL Class A highly desired)
  • Ability to read electrical and hydraulic schematics
  • Reasoning ability to resolve performance/diagnostic anomalies
  • Can understand & communicate technical instructions delivered via radio
  • Can advise on/follow OSHA and company safety rules and precautions
  • Ability to read and understand various field maps and topographic maps

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Mechanic Trade School Graduate
  • Previous experience working on Vibroseis equipment
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office business suite (Excel, Word, Outlook etc)
  • Ability to communicate in English and Spanish
  • Previous experience with Dept. of Transport Log Book requirements
  • Valid Medical Certification

The following work environment and physical demands are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
Work Environment:
The Mechanic is a Full-time position working in remote isolated outdoor environments, subject to extreme weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, snow and sudden changes in temperatures. Terrain may be uneven, slippery, inclined or unstable. Exposure to dust, dirt, fumes and vibration are expected and there is potential for exposure to corrosive battery acid.
The Mechanic works 7 days per week, with long hours and normally extensive overtime. A 30 day on/10 day off schedule is assigned. Daily schedules fluctuate based on weather conditions and operational needs. Schedules fluctuate and shifts may be allocated on a day or night basis due to weather conditions and operational needs. Extensive travel from job to job is required with lodging provided in motels near the jobsite. They must provide own basic tools, with specialty tools being provided by the company.
Physical Demands:
The Mechanic must be able to, but not limited to:
  • Constantly stand or remain in a stationary position when attending safety meetings awaiting and/or receiving instruction
  • Constantly use hands to finger, handle or feel equipment/parts
  • Constantly stoop, kneel, crouch or bend to get under vehicles
  • Constantly climb or balance when working on vibes
  • Constantly talk and listen to communicate and to receive instruction
  • Constantly required to use specific vision abilities, including close vision, distant vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Constantly communicate verbally and by typing using telephone and other media
  • Frequently walk long distances
  • Frequently lift and/or move equipment/parts up to 50lbs
  • Frequently sit to repair equipment and travel to/from jobsite
  • If the need arises be able to distinguish taste or smell of gas, spilled fluids, smoke
