Rotation:     5 DAYS ON / 2 DAYS OFF

Shift:           12 Hours 

Location:     Fort McMurray, AB

Pre-Employment Requirements:

• Successful completion of Alcohol and Drug Screening
• Successful completion of comprehensive Fitness-to-Work Assessment. This assessment is job-related, focusing on the physical demands and safety sensitive nature of the work, and is conducted in accordance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements and the Alberta Human Rights Act. The assessment will cover:
  • Health History Review: A thorough examination of the candidate's health background.
  • Pre-Medical Evaluation: Measurements such as height, weight, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.
  • Musculoskeletal Examination: A head-to-toe assessment to identify any limitations or concerns related to physical health.
  • Critical Strength and Mobility Test: A series of tasks assessing lifting, carrying, and positional abilities aligned with the job's physical demands (up to 50 lbs).
• Worker to provide:
  • Valid Safety Training tickets
    • CSO / BSO / CSTS-09/ OSSA Regional 
    • Intermediate First Aid with CPR & AED
    • H2S Alive
  • Valid Driver's License
  • CSA Approved safety boots - minimum 6" high & fully laceable.

Job Overview:

Reporting to the General Superintendent, Equipment Maintenance, the Maintenance General Foreman provides site-level leadership of the maintenance operation, including direct supervision of Lead hands, mechanics, and support personnel. The General Foreman ensures all maintenance work is completed safely and in full accordance with plans, specifications, scheduling, client direction, and good maintenance practices. Successful Maintenance General Foremen are recognized not only for their technical expertise, but also for their ability to lead people and prioritize work effectively and safely.

This position operates on a 5 days on / 2 days off (5/2) rotation. The General Foreman is expected to be available to work up to 12-hour shifts and provide leadership support as operational requirements dictate.

The General Foreman is expected to work outside in all weather conditions, demonstrate safe operation of equipment, and be able to read, comprehend, and comply with site-specific safety rules, maintenance instructions, training manuals, warning tags, traffic signs, and procedure manuals. The General Foreman will be able to identify potential hazards on site and implement the necessary precautionary measures to prevent incidents.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead by example by placing safety as the highest value.
• Participate in safety audits, equipment inspections, incident investigations, and personnel matters to provide technical input and sound judgment.
• Ensure the corporate values are understood, embraced, and implemented throughout the department, and personally demonstrate them in daily interactions and relationships.
• Establish and model a culture of making decisions based on achieving and enhancing project profitability, meeting schedules, maintaining customer satisfaction, and increasing field productivity and safety, in consideration of constraints and resources.
• Supervise, motivate, and develop maintenance personnel; mentor and train foremen, mechanics, and apprentices to build crew depth and capability.
• Build and maintain the crew schedule, including rotations, shift coverage (days/nights), vacation planning, and fatigue-management compliance, ensuring adequate coverage for planned and unplanned work.
• Participate in hiring and workforce planning: identify staffing needs, take part in recruitment and interviews, onboard new personnel, and manage performance, including progressive discipline where required.
• Coordinate and supervise repair schedules and ongoing preventive maintenance on assigned jobsites; ensure PM compliance and that all work is documented completely and accurately in the maintenance system (work orders, inspections, component history).
• Coordinate with operations on expected or unplanned outages to minimize downtime and schedule impact.
• Ensure spare parts and inventory are adequately managed to support planned work and minimize stockout-driven downtime.
• Provide daily direction to foremen and field mechanics based on job priorities, and monitor progress.
• Provide direction and clarification to sub-trades daily and as requested; ensure they follow established project safety practices and standards.
• Provide field presence to ensure the status of repairs is understood and repairs adhere to corporate quality standards.
• Assist the General Superintendent with evaluating fleet units and the advisability of continued repairs, overhauls, or replacement.
• Provide personal leadership to create positive and productive relationships with all internal and external parties to maximize performance and results.
• Monitor labor, parts, vendor, and maintenance expenses, and support cost-control initiatives to maximize fleet reliability and operational efficiency.
• Track, analyze, and report key maintenance performance indicators (KPIs), including equipment availability, downtime, preventive maintenance compliance, component life, and maintenance costs.
• Ensure effective utilization of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to manage work orders, preventive maintenance schedules, equipment history, inspections, and reporting.
• Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in maintenance processes, equipment reliability, and workforce productivity.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Five (5) or more years of experience maintaining heavy construction, mining, earthmoving, oil sands, or related heavy equipment, including dozers, excavators, haul trucks, and support equipment.
• Five (5) or more years of progressive maintenance leadership experience, including supervision of foremen, mechanics, apprentices, and support personnel in heavy equipment maintenance operations.
• Must be a licensed mechanic (Heavy Equipment Technician Journeyperson certification preferred).
• Experience utilizing Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for work order management, preventive maintenance scheduling, asset tracking, and reporting.
• Proven experience working within a strong safety culture and leading others in the same.
• Demonstrated experience monitoring maintenance performance metrics and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
• Ability to supervise, motivate, and develop maintenance personnel.
• Strong decision-making, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage multiple competing priorities under pressure and within strict deadlines.
• Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
• Experience dealing with permits.
• Valid Class 5 Driver's License with an acceptable driver's abstract.
• Must be able to meet all company and client site-access requirements, including pre-access testing and ongoing compliance with applicable policies and procedures.
• Must be willing to spend approximately 75% of time in the field and 25% of time performing safety, scheduling, and maintenance office duties.
• This position operates on a 5 days on / 2 days off (5/2) rotation.
• Must be able to repetitively lift 50 lbs.
• Must be able to work up to 12 hours per day.
