Mechanical Engineer
Program Summary
Kord, a wholly owned subsidiary of KBR, is a leader in advanced defense solutions with a strong focus on directed energy and high energy laser (HEL) technologies. Our HEL programs support the U.S. Department of Defense in developing, integrating, testing, and fielding cutting-edge laser weapon systems that enhance national security and deliver decisive battlefield advantages. These efforts require deep technical expertise in mechanical engineering, systems integration, and real-time performance of laser subsystems under demanding operational conditions.
JOB SUMMARY
KBR is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team at our Huntsville, Alabama office. The selected candidate will support high-energy laser system design and development projects. The Mechanical Engineer will research, develop, plan, design, and integrate mechanical products and systems. Applies principles and techniques of mechanical engineering to complete engineering projects and solve engineering problems in all phases of design, development, integration/implementation, and analysis, testing and participating in design reviews and evaluations.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Research, design, modify, develop and evaluate systems, products, components, and applications by applying fundamental mechanical engineering principles
• Understand basic principles for evaluating stress, strain, thermal management, mechanics of materials, and other subjects from undergraduate academics
• Validate vendor equipment performance, quality, and capabilities by developing testing methods, performing tests, and documenting test results
• Conduct and evaluate final system performance through execution of test procedures and data analysis
• Will lead projects to completion by developing schedules to ensure technical performance is met and within cost
• May perform site surveys and field installations under the supervision of a senior engineer
• Communicate and collaborate with other engineering disciplines, manufacturing personnel, management, vendors, customers, and subcontractors.
• Prepare engineering documentation, i.e., drawings, project specifications, procedures, test data and results
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's Degree with major in Engineering or related science, technology, or engineering discipline from accredited school or university
• At least 7+ years relevant experience in mechanical engineering or related disciplines
• US Citizenship
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance
• Ability to navigate and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and interface requirements.
• Strong analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex system behaviors.
• Excellent communication skills for interacting with engineers, program management, and government customers.
• Able and willing to work in an agile development environment.
• Able to work both independently and in a team environment
• Able to work in an active development lab environment
• Able to clearly communicate, express, and understand complex information.
• Effectively communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner
• Working knowledge of CAD and CFD software
• Working ability in the use of design calculators (Thermal, Center of Gravity, Vehicle Dynamics, Wind Loading, etc.)
• Basic knowledge of RF, communication, and power systems
• Ability to contribute to internal and external design reviews
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Master's Degree with major in Engineering or related science, technology, or engineering discipline from accredited school or university
• Extensive working experience with SolidWorks computer-aided design (CAD) software.
• Understanding of military specifications and certifications, raw material selection, engineering change process, design modification, use of CAD/CAM systems and manufacturing process development.
• Experience with High-Energy Lasers, directed energy, optical, or precision pointing systems.
• An understanding of electro-optical systems, beam control technologies, thermal management systems, or power management and storage systems.
• Knowledge of DoD systems engineering processes, requirements development, and verification/validation.
• Able to analyze and research complex to semi-complex technological issues.
• Prior experience supporting Army, Navy, Air Force, or OSD HEL programs
