Mechanic Design information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in technical drawing, and typically a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks) and simulation tools is crucial for creating and analyzing design models. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and good communication skills help ensure accurate designs and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are vital for producing innovative, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What is the difference between Mechanic Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectMechanic DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Design, CAD certificationsBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, CAD labs, manufacturing settingsResearch labs, manufacturing plants, consulting firms
Industry UsageProduct design, prototyping, CAD modelingSystem design, thermodynamics, structural analysis

Mechanic Design focuses on creating detailed product models and prototypes using CAD tools, often with specific design certifications. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, system design, and engineering principles, often requiring a PE license. Both roles are integral to manufacturing and product development but differ in scope and credentials.

What are some common challenges faced by mechanical design engineers in project development?

Mechanical design engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing innovation with manufacturability, managing strict project timelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as manufacturing, electrical, and quality assurance—is essential to address design constraints and optimize product performance. Staying up to date with evolving CAD tools and rapidly changing technology also requires continuous learning and adaptation.

What is a Mechanic Design?

A Mechanic Design refers to a professional who specializes in designing mechanical systems and components, often using computer-aided design (CAD) software. These individuals are responsible for creating blueprints, models, and specifications for machines, tools, engines, and other mechanical devices. Mechanic Design professionals play a key role in ensuring that designs are efficient, functional, and manufacturable while meeting safety and regulatory standards. They often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders throughout the development process.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
About the Role
We're looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical design of next-generation electronic products used in food service, retail, and healthcare environments. This role is responsible for taking products from early concept through production launch while partnering with electrical engineering, firmware, product management, suppliers, and manufacturing teams.
As the mechanical subject matter expert, you'll have significant ownership over product architecture, enclosure design, manufacturability, validation testing, and production support. You'll work independently while collaborating across disciplines to deliver innovative, reliable products that scale into manufacturing.
What You'll Do
  • Lead mechanical design efforts from concept development through mass production.
  • Design complex plastic and metal assemblies for electronic products and PCB enclosures.
  • Translate customer and product requirements into robust mechanical engineering solutions.
  • Develop 3D models, detailed drawings, and manufacturing documentation using advanced CAD tools.
  • Partner closely with electrical engineers to optimize PCB layouts, enclosure packaging, connectors, thermal performance, and overall system integration.
  • Design for manufacturability and assembly across injection molding, CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, die-cut components, and fabricated steel assemblies.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure reliable fit and function across production variation.
  • Prototype and iterate designs using 3D printing and hands-on fabrication techniques.
  • Create and execute verification and validation testing for mechanical performance, environmental conditions, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support suppliers and manufacturing partners through design reviews, troubleshooting, and production launches.
  • Drive multiple projects simultaneously while balancing technical priorities, schedules, and business needs.

What You'll Bring
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering discipline.
  • 5-8+ years of product development experience with a proven record of bringing products from concept through high-volume manufacturing.

Technical Expertise
  • Advanced CAD proficiency with complex assemblies and parametric modeling.
    • Preferred experience with Siemens NX and SolidWorks
    • Equivalent mastery in another enterprise CAD platform will also be considered
  • Deep understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA), such as:
    • Injection molding
    • CNC machining
    • Sheet metal
    • Die-cut components
    • Steel fabrication

  • Experience designing electronic enclosures such as:
    • PCB packaging
    • Thermal management
    • Heat sinks and airflow
    • Connector integration
    • IP-rated enclosure design

  • Experience collaborating across mechanical and electrical design disciplines (MCAD/ECAD integration).
  • Strong understanding of tolerance analysis including worst-case and RSS stack-ups.
  • Hands-on prototyping experience using 3D printing and basic fabrication tools.
  • Experience developing mechanical system architectures and translating high-level product requirements into engineering specifications.
  • Knowledge of verification and validation testing methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of engineering material selection including polymers and metals.

What Makes You Successful
  • Comfortable serving as the mechanical engineering expert and making independent technical decisions.
  • Strong collaborator who works effectively with electrical engineering, firmware, product management, manufacturing, suppliers, sales, compliance, and leadership teams.
  • Able to build trusted relationships with external suppliers and manufacturing partners.
  • Self-directed with the ability to thrive in ambiguous environments.
  • Takes ownership, solves problems creatively, and maintains momentum across multiple priorities.
  • Possesses a "figure-it-out" mindset with a passion for developing innovative products from idea to launch.

This is a hybrid role based out of our Chanhassen, MN location. The expected in-office schedule will be determined on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration factors such as the candidate's proximity to the office and business needs.
