Position Summary
The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Manager in overseeing daily department operations, ensuring exceptional customer service, product quality, food safety compliance, inventory management, merchandising execution, and team development. This position assists in achieving sales and profitability goals while maintaining fresh, high-quality meat and seafood offerings. The Assistant Meat Manager assumes leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Meat Manager.
Key Responsibilities Customer Service & Sales
  • Deliver outstanding customer service and promote a customer-first culture.
  • Assist customers with product selection, preparation recommendations, special orders, and product inquiries.
  • Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Support sales growth through effective merchandising, promotional displays, and seasonal programs.
  • Ensure service cases and displays remain fully stocked, fresh, and visually appealing.
Department Operations
  • Assist with daily Meat Department operations, including ordering, receiving, cutting, packaging, stocking, and inventory management.
  • Maintain proper inventory levels to support sales while minimizing shrink and waste.
  • Monitor product freshness, quality, rotation, and code date compliance.
  • Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and promotional execution.
  • Support proper receiving, storage, and handling procedures for all meat and seafood products.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and efficient work areas throughout the department.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Assist in training, coaching, and developing Meat Department associates.
  • Provide leadership and direction during assigned shifts.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Support labor management and scheduling initiatives.
  • Assist with onboarding and training new associates on department procedures, food safety standards, and customer service expectations.
Merchandising & Product Quality
  • Help maintain attractive and well-stocked service cases, bunkers, and displays.
  • Execute merchandising plans, seasonal programs, and promotional events.
  • Monitor product presentation and ensure quality standards are consistently met.
  • Ensure fresh products are properly trimmed, packaged, labeled, and displayed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve sales through merchandising and product assortment.
Financial Management
  • Assist in achieving department sales, gross profit, labor, and shrink objectives.
  • Support inventory control and expense management initiatives.
  • Help reduce shrink through proper ordering, rotation, handling, and production practices.
  • Review department conditions and identify opportunities for operational improvement.
  • Assist with physical inventory counts and recordkeeping processes.
Food Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor proper product handling, storage, labeling, temperature control, and sanitation procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment.
  • Ensure associates follow all food safety and operational standards.
  • Support compliance with company policies and procedures.
Safety & Asset Protection
  • Promote a safe working environment for associates and customers.
  • Ensure proper operation and maintenance of department equipment.
  • Follow accident prevention and incident reporting procedures.
  • Support loss prevention and shrink reduction initiatives.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas.
Leadership Coverage
  • Assume responsibility for department operations in the absence of the Meat Manager.
  • Support staffing decisions, operational priorities, and productivity goals.
  • Communicate department expectations, goals, and performance standards to associates.
  • Partner with store leadership to achieve departmental and store-wide objectives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous meat, seafood, grocery, or retail experience required.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of meat merchandising, food safety, and inventory management practices.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, kneel, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier loads with assistance when necessary.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated and freezer environments.
  • Ability to safely operate knives, slicers, grinders, saws, and other meat processing equipment.
