Job description

The Opportunity:

Red River Co-op is recruiting for the position of full-time Meat Department Backup at our Selkirk Food Store located at 275 Main Street, in Selkirk, Manitoba. This position reports to the Meat Manager. The Meat Department Backup adds value to our Co-operative by providing leadership to the Meat Department and assisting the Meat Manager in day-to-day operations.ย 

Essential responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Assist the Meat Manager in ensuring standards of department presentation and operations are met, including cleanliness and sanitation, food safety and food handling standards, inventory control, rotation, ordering and commitment buys, checking and responding to e-mails, assisting with inventory counts, and the delivery of world-class customer service.
  • Provide leadership and direction to employees in accordance with company policies, procedures, programs, merchandising standards and overall expectations.
  • Assist with scheduling department staff to meet production and customer service needs.
  • Assist with resolving problems that arise, such as customer complaints, supply shortages, and staffing issues.
  • Prepare cuts of meat for retail sale using a knife and various power equipment (band saw, grinder, patty maker, etc.)
  • Prepare marinated meats and other "value added" products.
  • Interact with customers, provide recommendations and answer questions about cuts of meat, including cooking instructions.

About You:

To be successful in this role, you will bring the following skills, previous experience, and competencies:

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in a retail meat department as a meat cutter; OR formal training in meat cutting, such as the Food Processing (Animal Proteins) program at Assiniboine Community College.ย 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. We're looking for someone who builds great relationships with co-workers and customers.
  • Strong customer focus and interest in serving others.
  • Open availability and willing to work different shifts including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Available to work 40 hours per week.
