Role Overview:
Netsmart is seeking a Senior Director, AI & Engineering Development to lead the delivery of AI-enabled engineering solutions across our healthcare technology platform. This role is responsible for executing AI and engineering initiatives that translate product strategy into scalable, reliable, and high-impact solutions for our clients and communities.
Title rationale (recommended): We use "AI & Engineering Development" to clearly reflect the hands-on software development foundation required for this leader-someone who can build, scale, and operationalize AI capabilities in production while leading high-performing engineering teams.
Reporting to senior technology and product leadership, the Senior Director will provide hands-on technical and people leadership, partnering closely with Product, Data, Clinical, Security, and Compliance teams to ensure AI capabilities are delivered responsibly, securely, and at scale.Key Responsibilities:AI & Engineering Execution
  • Lead engineering teams responsible for building, deploying, and operating AI-enabled and data-driven solutions.
  • Translate AI and product strategy into clear engineering roadmaps, delivery plans, and outcomes.
  • Ensure solutions meet Netsmart standards for quality, performance, security, reliability, and scalability.
  • Apply modern engineering, DevOps, and MLOps practices to support continuous delivery and operational excellence.
Product & Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Partner with Product Management to deliver AI capabilities aligned to client needs and market priorities.
  • Collaborate with Data Science and Analytics teams to operationalize models into production systems.
  • Work closely with Clinical, Compliance, Privacy, and Security partners to meet healthcare and regulatory requirements.
Architecture, Platforms & Standards
  • Provide technical leadership across AI platforms, data pipelines, and system integrations.
  • Establish and uphold engineering standards, architectural patterns, and best practices.
  • Drive reuse and platform thinking to enable scalable and sustainable AI delivery across solutions.
  • We need someone who can leverage artificial intelligence to accelerate, automate, and optimize the migration and modernization of applications to cloud environments.

    What that looks like in practice:
    • AI-assisted code modernization (refactoring monoliths into microservices using AI tools)
    • Automated code analysis & conversion (language/framework upgrades, dependency mapping)
    • Intelligent workload migration (AI identifies what to move, how, and in what order)
    • AI-driven testing & validation (auto-generating test cases, catching regressions)
    • Optimization in the cloud (AI tuning performance, cost, and scaling patterns)
    • Embedding AI into migrated apps (adding copilots, NLP, or predictive capabilities post-migration)
Responsible AI & Governance
  • Implement responsible AI practices including transparency, explainability, monitoring, and continuous validation.
  • Support AI governance, risk management, and compliance efforts in partnership with leadership.
  • Ensure AI solutions align with Netsmart's commitment to trust, safety, and community impact.
People Leadership
  • Lead, coach, and develop high-performing AI and engineering teams.
  • Recruit, retain, and grow technical talent aligned with Netsmart values and standards.

Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, including leadership roles with increasing scope.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering AI, machine learning, or data-driven systems in production.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-based architectures, AI/ML platforms, and MLOps practices.
  • Experience working in regulated industries; healthcare experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to partner effectively across engineering, product, data, and business teams.
