As of Aug 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for mbse engineer in Colorado is $91,713.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $80,400.00 and $102,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Mbse Engineer vs Systems Engineer?

AspectMbse EngineerSystems Engineer
CertificationsModel-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) certifications, UML, SysMLINCOSE Systems Engineering certifications, PMP, UML, SysML
Work EnvironmentDesign and develop system models, collaborate with engineering teamsOversee system integration, requirements analysis, project management
Industry UsageAerospace, automotive, defense, where modeling is keyBroad industry use including aerospace, IT, manufacturing

While both roles involve systems thinking and modeling, an Mbse Engineer primarily focuses on creating and managing system models using MBSE tools and methodologies. A Systems Engineer has a broader scope, including requirements management, system integration, and project oversight. The roles often overlap but differ in focus and responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MBSE Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) Engineer, you need expertise in systems engineering principles, requirements analysis, and model development, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency with modeling tools such as SysML, MagicDraw, Enterprise Architect, or Cameo Systems Modeler and relevant certifications like INCOSE CSEP are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help MBSE Engineers collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and convey complex ideas clearly. These skills are crucial for designing, integrating, and validating complex systems efficiently while minimizing errors and ensuring project success.

What are some common challenges MBSE Engineers face when integrating model-based systems engineering into existing workflows?

MBSE Engineers often encounter challenges when introducing model-based approaches into organizations that have traditionally relied on document-based processes. This can include resistance to change from team members, the need to align different tools and data formats, and ensuring that all stakeholders understand and trust the models being created. Successful MBSE Engineers typically address these challenges by promoting clear communication, offering training sessions, and demonstrating the tangible benefits of MBSE, such as improved traceability and early error detection. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and providing ongoing support are also key factors in smooth integration.

What is an MBSE Engineer?

An MBSE Engineer is a professional who specializes in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), a methodology that uses models to support the requirements, design, analysis, verification, and validation of complex systems. Instead of relying solely on traditional documents, MBSE Engineers use modeling tools and standards to create a comprehensive and integrated system model. This approach improves communication, reduces errors, and enhances system design and analysis throughout a project's lifecycle. MBSE Engineers often work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and manufacturing where complex system integration is required.

Job description

Overview/ Job Responsibilities

Position is contingent upon contract award and funding.

Entarian is seeking an experienced MBSE Engineer (SysML / Cameo) to support system development through Model-Based Systems Engineering practices, using SysML and Cameo to define, analyze, document, and validate system architectures. This role enables consistent communication across engineering teams and ensures requirements, behaviors, and structures are captured within the system model throughout the life-cycle.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Develop and maintain SysML models (requirements, behavior, structure, parametrics) using Cameo
  • Translate stakeholder needs and system concepts into formal model elements
  • Integrate MBSE practices into program processes, including requirements analysis, architecture development, and verification planning
  • Create diagrams including Activity, Sequence, State Machine, Use Case, Block Definition, Internal Block, and Parametric diagrams
  • Ensure model traceability across requirements, design elements, interface definitions, verification methods, and test artifacts
  • Support the development of the Requirements Verification Traceability Matrix (RVTM) within the system model
  • Conduct model-based analyses, trade studies, and simulations to assess architectural alternatives
  • Manage model configuration, version control, and collaborative modeling environments
  • Generate model-based documentation (architecture descriptions, specifications, interface control documents, etc.)
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure model accuracy and alignment with system implementation
  • Support integration of MBSE tools with other engineering environments (e.g., DOORS, Jira, code analysis tools)
  • Assist in verification and validation activities by ensuring requirements are testable and correctly represented in the model

Salary range: $140,000.00 - $170,000.00

Minimum Qualifications
  • Active Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility.
  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience supporting complex defense, space, communications, information technology, intelligence, or mission operations programs.
  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Professional experience developing SysML models using Cameo Systems Modeler
  • Knowledge of MBSE methodologies and standards (INCOSE, DoDAF, UAF, OMG SysML)
  • Experience with requirements analysis, architecture development, and system design
  • Familiarity with version control and model repositories (Cameo Teamwork Cloud, Git, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of system lifecycle processes and configuration management
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare and present technical briefings to senior government leadership.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Power-Point, Excel, Project, and Outlook.
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% to support customer locations, mission partner engagements, technical reviews, and operational activities.
