Business Intelligence MBA Intern

Job description

The Washington Spirit is looking for a current MBA student or recent grad to join our Business Intelligence department for the summer as a Business Intelligence Intern. This is a project-driven role built around modeling, strategic analysis, and hands-on ownership of key revenue-generating initiatives. In this hands-on role, you will be building the analytical tools and frameworks that power decisions across the organization.
Reporting to the VP of Strategy & Analytics, you will work closely with the full Business Strategy team on modeling, project execution, and strategic initiatives that require a higher level of analytical horsepower than the existing team's bandwidth can absorb. We are looking for someone who can own a technical deliverable end-to-end: structuring the problem, building the model, and presenting the recommendation.
If you are a curious, commercially minded MBA student who wants real exposure to the business of professional sports - and the analytics infrastructure that powers it - we'd love to speak to you.
What Will You Do?
The following are illustrative example projects for this role.
Modeling & Analytics
  • Build revenue and financial models that support key Elevate (third party ticketing agency) initiatives, including scenario analyses, pricing models, demand forecasts, and ROI frameworks across ticket sales, sponsorship, and fan engagement functions.
  • Develop analytical tools and decision-support frameworks that translate complex data into clear, actionable outputs for department heads and senior leadership.
  • Conduct fan segmentation and consumer insights analysis, synthesizing survey data, behavioral data, and third-party research into models and recommendations that inform marketing, ticketing, and fan engagement strategy.

Strategy & Execution
  • Own defined deliverables within the Spirit's strategic initiatives, taking projects from problem definition through analysis to modeling, and presenting recommendations derived from those outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Ticket Operations and Strategy on data-driven initiatives related to pricing strategy, inventory allocation, and demand monitoring.
  • Translate analytical findings into clear, concise presentations and recommendations for business audiences, including department heads and senior leadership.

More About You
  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed an MBA program; concentration in analytics, strategy, marketing, or sports business a plus.
  • Prior work experience in analytics, strategy, consulting, or a data-adjacent function, whether before or during your MBA, is preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel required; experience with at least one relevant technology (Power BI or Tableau, SQL, Python, or similar tools) strongly preferred.
  • Comfort working with data: pulling it, cleaning it, questioning it, and building something useful with it.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present analytical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Highly organized and self-directed, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and deliver quality work under a deadline.
  • Genuine curiosity about the business of sports and entertainment, and an eagerness to learn how a professional sports organization operates.
  • Ability to work remotely and independently, with availability for regular virtual check-ins with the BI team; opportunity for occasional in-person travel to the Washington, DC area for in-person experiences (in-office and/or in-venue) will also be available

Location:
This role is primarily remote. Candidates must reside in one of the following states: AZ, CA, DC, MA, MD, NJ, NY, PA, TX, VA, or WV. The intern will have opportunities to be onsite at the Spirit's offices in Falls Church, VA for 1 - 4 weeks during the internship period.
ABOUT THE WASHINGTON SPIRIT
The Washington Spirit is a founding club of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), proudly representing the Washington, DC metropolitan area. It is the first franchise to have a minority woman hold a majority stake. A visionary entrepreneur, Michele Kang, is leading a new era for women's sports with a vision to:
  • Become the most preeminent sports organization in the world
  • Build a high-performance culture of winning on and off the pitch
  • Train women as women
  • Motivate and inspire the next generation of girls and women

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, gender identity, marital or veteran status, or any other protected class.
Job Questions:
  1. Are you currently enrolled in an MBA program or recently completed an MBA program?
  2. Would you be able to start the internship program on June 1st?
