Description
Cleveland Heights is a diverse, progressive first-ring suburb of about 45,312 residents, located minutes from downtown Cleveland and University Circle. THE MAYORAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The Cleveland Heights Mayoral Internship Program gives college students hands-on experience in local government. Interns work closely with the Mayor, Mayor's Office staff, and Department Directors. Placements are based on each student's interests, experience, and skills, as well as the City'sneeds.
Prospective mayoral interns will be high school graduates currently enrolled in a four-year college or university as undergraduate or graduate students. The ideal candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills, a record of academic achievement, a demonstrated commitment to public service, and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Candidates will have strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of maintaining a high level of ethics and integrity in the workenvironment.
Examples of Duties
  • Preparing correspondence, presentations,memos;
  • Answering and referring constituentcalls;
  • Assisting with project and eventcoordination/execution;
  • Participating in outreach and marketingefforts;
  • Representing or accompanying the Mayor or Mayor's staff at meetings, whenappropriate;
  • Researching economic and market trends, policy matters, and legislativeissues;
  • Reviewing, summarizing, and analyzing data andreports

Typical Qualifications
Skills in:
  • Using computers and related software applications
  • Conducting informal research and analysis of policies pr programs
Education/ experience:
  • Must be a current graduate student in good standing with interest in local government management
  • Previous experience in a professional setting in or related to any of the following areas: public administration, urban planning and development, political science, public policy, nonprofit administration, and business administration
Ability to:
  • Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with the Mayor, City staff, elected officials, community partners and the public, to sufficiently exchange or convey information, and to receive work direction
  • Effectively research and summarize new information and apply findings

Supplemental Information
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
May receive academic credit and may work roughly 15-20 hours per week; however, depending on the season and individual requirements, additional hours and schedules may be necessary.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
