Job description

POSITION: General Maintenance Technician

SEASON: Austral Summer (Summer 2026-2027)

LOCATION: McMurdo Station, Antarctica

SECTOR/DEPT: Gana-A'Yoo Services Corporation (GSC) Antarctica

Salary: $1,000-$1,400 per week

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for general maintenance and repairs of all station recreation equipment, kitchen equipment, housing furniture, and general handyman work for housing/recreation/culinary departments.
  • Conduct general maintenance of recreational and kitchen, lodging and janitorial equipment.
  • Performs major overhauls to include dismantling, replacing parts, and making repairs to all related equipment, including heating, ventilating, cooling, refrigeration diagnoses and repairs failures as they occur in support components including kitchen equipment.
  • May act as first responder to trouble calls on facilities and utilities systems.
  • May be required to work outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions.
  • Performs physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of vehicles, crawling as needed, working outdoors in extreme cold, and walking long distances daily. Snow shoveling, ice-chipping, and other forms of manual labor required.
  • Performs daily equipment checks to ensure all equipment is properly maintained and in safe operating condition.
  • Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements.
  • Accurately records time worked and equipment hours used daily in Maximo.
  • Performs other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum two years' experience in a wide variety of facility maintenance and repairs preferred
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.

PREFERRED

Familiarity with Microsoft Office preferred.

Prior cold-climate equipment operations preferred.

Familiarity with kitchen refrigeration, ovens, ranges etc.

EDUCATION: High school graduate or equivalent is strongly preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSING REQUIREMENTS: Valid Driver's license required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move around the facility 75% or more of the time. The employee is occasionally required to remain in a stationary position for at least 25% of the time. The employee frequently is required to maneuver self to be able to reach product and/or materials needed for task. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 65 pounds. Must have capacity for exposure to long hours, days, and weeks away from home.

  • US citizenship or permanent residency required.
  • A prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Tier 1 - Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment. Candidates hired for this position will be required to complete; online forms, written forms, fingerprint cards and provide additional details and information as requested by NSF Personnel Security.
  • This position is contingent upon ASC approval and funding in the upcoming program plan.
