Description IMMEDIATE VACANCIES: Department of Environmental Management Department of Water Supply IMPORTANT: HIRING RATES WILL BE BASED ON AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS, THE APPLICANT'S QUALIFICATIONS, AND OTHER RELEVANT FACTORS. Appointment may be made at any rate within the salary range from EN-18D ($5,761) to EN-18I ($6,597) per month. Does routine professional engineering work in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of civil engineering projects; assists in preparing designs, plans, specifications, estimates and reports; and performs other related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the entry level class in the professional civil engineering series. This class differs from that of Civil Engineer II in that the Civil Engineer I receives specific instructions and follows well established engineering practices, whereas the Civil Engineer II exercises some degree of judgment based on experience. This class differs from classes in the Drafting series in that the Civil Engineer I may perform drafting work including limited assignments in designing.

This class differs from classes in the Land Surveying series in that the Civil Engineer I is primarily concerned with the design, construction or inspection of engineering projects and topographical surveying is incidental to the aforementioned duties and responsibilities. Examples of Duties The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.

Assists in making preliminary and final surveys. Reduces and plots survey notes. Computes vertical and horizontal curves and earthwork quantities.

Prepares mass diagrams. Assists in the design of reservoirs, retaining walls, bridges, culverts, tunnels, pipelines, sewers, sidewalks, highways and other concrete, steel and timber structures by developing details, checking computations and preparing final working drawings, reinforcing steel details and material schedules. Assists in field engineering inspections.

Interprets plans and specifications. Tests construction materials. Computes lot closures and areas.

Makes land use studies. Assists in the preparation of hydrologic studies. Computes extensions and adjustments to a triangulation system.

Computes data and prepares maps. Checks plans. Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. License Requirement: None. Knowledge of: the principles and practices of general civil engineering; engineering mathematics; engineering mechanics and the mechanics of materials; the principles and practices of topographic surveying; structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, hydrologic and sanitary engineering principles and practices to the extent these apply to the general field of civil engineering.

Ability to: do engineering drafting and simple design work; interpret plans, specifications and land descriptions; plot survey notes; prepare maps, plans, profiles and cross-sections.
