What does a Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer do?

A Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer uses Matlab and Simulink software to design, simulate, and analyze mechanical systems and control algorithms. They create models that represent mechanical components and systems, run simulations to predict performance, and optimize designs before physical prototypes are built. This role is commonly found in industries like automotive, aerospace, and robotics, where modeling and simulation help reduce development time and costs. The engineer also collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that the systems meet technical and safety requirements.

How does a Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer frequently works alongside electrical engineers, controls engineers, and software developers to design and simulate complex mechanical systems. Collaboration usually involves participating in design reviews, sharing simulation results to inform hardware decisions, and integrating models with other engineering domains. Effective communication and regular meetings are key, as these engineers translate mechanical requirements into simulation models that must align closely with the work of other team members. This collaborative environment not only ensures the accuracy of the overall system but also provides opportunities to learn from diverse engineering perspectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid grounding in mechanical engineering principles, system modeling, and simulation, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with Matlab, Simulink, and related toolboxes, along with familiarity with control systems or automotive modeling standards such as ISO 26262, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication skills help engineers collaborate on complex projects and convey technical concepts clearly. These skills ensure accurate modeling, efficient development processes, and successful integration of mechanical systems in multidisciplinary environments.

What is the difference between Matlab Simulink Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMatlab Simulink Mechanical EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusModeling, simulation, and analysis of mechanical systems using Matlab SimulinkDesigning, developing, and testing mechanical components and systems

Job description

Mechanical Engineer – Power Systems (Defense Technology)

We are a defense technology company developing advanced power systems that enable sustained, distributed energy capability for mission-critical military operations. Our products are designed to support next-generation defense platforms by decoupling power generation from consumption, improving survivability, mobility, and operational effectiveness in austere environments.

Our engineering team builds highly integrated mechanical, electrical, and thermal systems that must perform reliably under extreme conditions and meet stringent military performance, endurance, and reliability requirements.

The Role

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Powertrain Engineering team. In this role, you will design, develop, and test complex mechanical and electromechanical systems, including tightly integrated power and energy subsystems for defense applications.

You will take ownership of hardware from early concept through prototyping, testing, production, and field deployment, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver robust, manufacturable, and mission-ready systems.

What You'll Do

  • Own mechanical and electromechanical hardware design from concept through prototype, production, and field deployment
  • Design tightly integrated systems including energy storage, power electronics, thermal systems, structural enclosures, and high-density packaging solutions
  • Develop 3D CAD models and production-ready 2D drawings with GD&T and industry standards compliance
  • Perform structural, thermal, and mechanical analysis using first principles, hand calculations, and CAE/FEA tools
  • Rapidly prototype, test, debug, and iterate designs under compressed development timelines
  • Design for high-volume and defense-grade manufacturing including machining, sheet metal, casting, composites, and PCB integration
  • Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure feasibility, quality, and reliability of designs
  • Support system integration, test campaigns, and root cause analysis of hardware failures
  • Engage directly with customers during demonstrations and field evaluations to better understand mission requirements
  • Translate test and field data into actionable design improvements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical or electromechanical system design in professional or research environments
  • Experience owning or significantly contributing to end-to-end hardware development programs
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks or equivalent) and production drawing creation with GD&T
  • Experience with CAE/FEA tools and strong engineering fundamentals in structures, thermal systems, mechanics, and materials
  • Hands-on prototyping and fabrication experience including machining, shop tools, and rapid prototyping methods
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, sheet metal, casting, forging, or composites
  • Exposure to MIL-STD, DO-160, or similar aerospace/defense standards

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with high-voltage or high-power electromechanical systems
  • Background in energy storage systems, battery thermal management, or power electronics integration
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink or similar modeling tools
  • Familiarity with simulation and CAE tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, COMSOL, or STAR-CCM+
  • Experience with instrumentation and data acquisition tools (LabVIEW, DAQ systems, Python, CAN tools)
  • Experience with PLM and engineering collaboration tools (JIRA, Confluence, Teamcenter, etc.)
  • Experience integrating sensors and performing data analysis/processing for engineering validation
  • Background in aerospace, automotive, robotics, or other high-reliability hardware environments
