Position Overview

Assistant Professor, Mathematics Education. Effective Date: August 17, 2027 (Fall Semester). Salary: $7,330 to $8,000 per month, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in mathematics education, statistics, or data science education, or a related field with a background in education research; degree at time of application or official notification of completion by August 1, 2027.
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching effectiveness and excellence in higher education, reflecting an understanding of the impacts of race, ethnicity, and other identities on students’ lives.
  • Demonstrated potential for published scholarship in mathematics education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including low socioeconomic and first‑generation students.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in mathematics or statistics or relevant experience in addition to a doctoral degree.
  • Experience successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body, including mentoring students from underrepresented groups and using culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting students using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies and a record of teaching excellence that reflects an understanding of the impacts of race, ethnicity, and other identities.
  • Potential to teach and engage in research within any subdiscipline(s) of mathematics education, especially in ways that complement the expertise of current faculty.
  • Potential for partnering with diverse urban K‑12 school districts and/or other educational contexts on grants and professional development activities.
  • Potential for obtaining external funding for mathematics education projects.
  • Experience in scholarly communication in mathematics education, such as conference presentations and publications.
  • Potential for supervising students’ mathematics education research projects.

Responsibilities
  • Teach and develop equitable undergraduate mathematics courses for future mathematics educators (including Mathematics Education majors and Liberal Studies majors), delivered in‑person, hybrid, online, or any combination.
  • Teach and develop graduate courses for scholars enrolled in the Master of Science in Mathematics for Educators.
  • Contribute to departmental, university, and CSU efforts to develop, credential, and support K‑12 diverse mathematics teachers.
  • Advise undergraduate and/or graduate students (e.g., academic advising, scholarly projects).
  • Supervise student teachers.
  • Support department and university initiatives to improve graduation and passing rates, including developing and improving curriculum.
  • Maintain and engage in impactful mathematics education research and scholarly activity (e.g., publications, presentations) that support research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Seek grant funds to support mathematics education research and professional development of in‑service pre‑K‑12 mathematics teachers and/or CSULB faculty.
  • Participate in service at all levels of the university and in the greater mathematics education community.
