How much do mathematical physics jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for mathematical physics in the United States is $61,160.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $46,000.00 and $64,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What kinds of projects or research areas do Mathematical Physicists typically work on?

Mathematical Physicists often engage in projects that explore the mathematical foundations of physical theories, such as quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, or general relativity. Their work can involve developing new theoretical models, simulating physical systems, or solving complex equations that describe real-world phenomena. Many Mathematical Physicists collaborate with other scientists or engineers on interdisciplinary teams, and may contribute to advances in fields like materials science, computational physics, or even finance. These roles offer opportunities to publish research, present at conferences, and sometimes to teach or mentor students, depending on the work environment.

What is a Mathematical Physics job?

A Mathematical Physics job involves using advanced mathematical methods to solve complex problems in physics. Professionals in this field work on theoretical models, analyze physical systems, and develop mathematical frameworks to describe fundamental forces and particles. They may contribute to areas like quantum mechanics, relativity, statistical mechanics, or computational physics. Careers in mathematical physics can be found in academia, research institutions, technology companies, or financial industries where analytical modeling is essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Mathematical Physics position, and why are they important?

Excelling in Mathematical Physics requires a robust background in advanced mathematics, theoretical physics, and typically a master's or Ph.D. in a related discipline. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or MATLAB, experience with computational modeling, and data analysis tools are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and effective communication help professionals explain complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. These competencies are essential for developing innovative models, conducting rigorous research, and collaborating effectively with interdisciplinary teams.

Job description

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for Physics PhD professionals experienced in advanced quantum mechanics, advanced electrodynamics, classical mechanics, rigorous problem design, and expert-level scientific reasoning.

This role supports current and upcoming remote consulting opportunities focused on advanced physics problem creation, technical task design, expert solution review, scientific reasoning evaluation, and high-quality project execution. Selected professionals will apply their physics expertise to design challenging domain-specific problems, follow complex instructions, evaluate technical reasoning, and support structured review workflows requiring graduate-level physics judgment.

Key Responsibilities

Professionals in this role may contribute to:

Advanced Physics Problem Design

  • Create challenging expert-level problems in advanced quantum mechanics, advanced electrodynamics, or classical mechanics
  • Design tasks that require rigorous physics reasoning, mathematical precision, and strong domain understanding
  • Develop problem statements that are clear, technically sound, and appropriate for advanced evaluation workflows
  • Ensure tasks are difficult, well-scoped, and aligned with graduate-level physics expectations

Solution Review & Technical Validation

  • Write or review expert-level reference solutions for advanced physics problems
  • Validate reasoning steps, mathematical derivations, assumptions, and final answers
  • Identify technical errors, incomplete reasoning, unclear problem structure, or gaps in scientific logic
  • Apply high attention to detail when reviewing physics content, task instructions, and solution quality

Structured Evaluation & Feedback

  • Follow complex project instructions and apply consistent evaluation criteria
  • Assess whether tasks and solutions meet rigorous technical standards
  • Provide clear written feedback explaining scientific reasoning, correctness, and improvement areas
  • Maintain accuracy, consistency, and professional judgment across submitted work

Ideal Profile

Strong candidates may have:

  • Completed PhD in Physics
  • Specialization in advanced quantum mechanics, advanced electrodynamics, classical mechanics, or a closely related advanced physics area
  • Graduate degree or advanced research background from a strong academic program in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, or Western Europe
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English
  • High attention to detail and ability to follow complex technical instructions
  • Strong ability to design, solve, and evaluate graduate-level physics problems
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, project-based environment

Educational Background

  • A completed PhD in Physics is expected
  • Research background in quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, classical mechanics, mathematical physics, theoretical physics, or closely related fields is highly relevant
  • Teaching, grading, problem-writing, exam design, research supervision, or advanced academic evaluation experience may be especially valuable

Nice to Have

  • Experience designing graduate-level problem sets, exams, technical assessments, or benchmark tasks
  • Familiarity with rigorous solution writing, derivations, proof-style reasoning, or advanced mathematical physics workflows
  • Experience reviewing technical work for correctness, clarity, and completeness
  • Comfort working with complex written instructions and structured evaluation criteria
  • Ability to contribute approximately 4โ€“6 tasks per week, with each task requiring several hours depending on complexity

Why This Opportunity

  • Apply advanced physics expertise to structured remote project work
  • Contribute to high-quality problem design, technical reasoning review, and expert-level evaluation workflows
  • Work on flexible assignments aligned with your physics specialization and academic background
  • Use your PhD-level judgment to create difficult, rigorous, and technically precise physics tasks
  • Remote structure with competitive hourly compensation
