Math Minor information

What is a math minor?

A math minor is an academic program that allows undergraduate students to take a focused set of mathematics courses in addition to their major field of study. It typically requires completion of a series of core math classes, such as calculus, linear algebra, and potentially more advanced topics. Pursuing a math minor can enhance analytical and problem-solving skills, making graduates more competitive in a variety of fields, including science, engineering, finance, and technology.

How can pursuing a math minor complement my primary field of study and enhance my career prospects?

Adding a Math Minor to your degree can significantly strengthen analytical and problem-solving skills, making you a more versatile candidate in fields such as finance, engineering, computer science, and data analysis. Many employers value the quantitative reasoning and logical thinking that a background in mathematics provides, regardless of your primary major. Additionally, a Math Minor can open doors to interdisciplinary projects and research opportunities, and may serve as a strong foundation if you decide to pursue graduate studies or specialized certifications in the future.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mathematician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a mathematician, you need a strong foundation in mathematical theory, problem-solving, and analytical reasoning, typically supported by a degree in mathematics or a related field. Familiarity with mathematical software such as MATLAB, Mathematica, or R, and knowledge of programming languages like Python are commonly required. Attention to detail, perseverance, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on complex problems and presenting solutions clearly. These skills and qualities are essential for advancing mathematical understanding and successfully applying mathematical concepts in academic, research, or industry settings.

What can I do with a minor in math?

A minor in math can enhance qualifications for roles such as data analyst, financial analyst, or operations researcher, where strong quantitative and problem-solving skills are valued. It also prepares individuals for careers in education, research, or further study in fields like engineering or computer science, often requiring proficiency with tools like spreadsheets or statistical software.

At 5th Axis, we're global leaders in precision machining, automated production, and turnkey manufacturing solutions. From advanced workholding systems to zero-point technology-we design, build, and deliver it all. We don't just make products; we build the future of manufacturing.
Built for Machinists Who Take Pride in Precision
This role is designed for skilled machinists who know how to take ownership of a machine, dial in setups, solve issues, and keep production moving.
If you've spent years mastering setups, tooling, tolerances, machine efficiency, and production flow-and want to join a high-performance team where your skill matters-this is your opportunity.
Be the Difference on the Production Floor
As our CNC Setup Machinist, you'll be responsible for safely setting up and operating advanced CNC machines and manufacturing cells in a fast-paced production environment.
You'll work closely with operators, programmers, leads, and production management to ensure setups are accurate, machines run efficiently, and quality standards are consistently met.
What This Job Actually Looks Like
  • You set up a Hermle, Robo Drill, HAAS, or Doosan machine for a critical production run and ensure first article success
  • You troubleshoot tooling, offsets, or setup issues to keep production moving
  • You verify dimensions, tolerances, and offsets before production begins
  • You support operators by handing off stable, repeatable setups
  • You make minor machine-side edits to improve machine performance and efficiency
  • You help the team hit production and delivery goals without sacrificing quality
What You'll Do Here
  • Set up and operate CNC machines including Robo Drill, HAAS, and Doosan platforms
  • Perform setups on advanced 3- and 4-axis CNC milling machines
  • Utilize Fanuc controls and perform minor machine-side program edits
  • Operate and support manufacturing cells in a high-volume environment
  • Interpret blueprints, specifications, setup sheets, and manufacturing documentation
  • Perform setups using probes and tool setters
  • Verify parts meet tolerance and quality standards
  • Document setups and support process standardization
  • Coordinate production priorities to support manufacturing timelines
  • Maintain accurate job tracking and production records within Epicor ERP (preferred)
  • Accurately complete travelers, including part counts and revision verification
  • Troubleshoot tooling, machine, and setup issues quickly and effectively
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment
  • Communicate effectively across departments to support workflow and production requirements
  • Support continuous improvement and efficiency efforts
  • Perform other duties as assigned
You Must Have
  • High School Diploma or equivalent job experience
  • Minimum 3 years of CNC setup machinist experience
  • Strong experience setting up 3- and 4-axis CNC milling machines
  • Working knowledge of Fanuc controls
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and manufacturing documentation
  • Experience with setup sheets, offsets, probes, and tool setters
  • Strong understanding of G & M codes
  • Ability to perform minor machine-side program edits
  • Strong troubleshooting and tooling optimization capabilities
  • Strong mathematical and inspection skills
  • Experience using precision inspection equipment including calipers, gauges, indicators, pins, micrometers, and height gauges
  • Ability to thrive in a very fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Ability to work overtime and weekends as needed
What You'll Bring
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent math and measurement skills
  • Sense of urgency and pride in quality work
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Self-motivated attitude with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively across teams
  • Desire to contribute to a high-performance manufacturing culture
