Churchill Scholarships at the University of Cambridge
Fellowship Description
The Churchill Scholarship provides funding to American students for a year of Master's study in science, mathematics, and engineering at the University of Cambridge, based at Churchill College.
Eligibleare US citizens with majors in appropriate STEM fields who are graduating seniors at Wellesley or who received their Wellesley degrees less than 12 months ago - and who are applying simultaneously for an eligible program of study at Cambridge.
*Wellesley may nominate no more than two candidates each year.
Interviews: if the Wellesley nomination committee elects to do interviews it would be in October, ahead of the final application deadline for nominated candidates on November 2, 2026.
To apply for Wellesley's nomination by the campus deadline on October 2, 2026:
  • Submit your official Churchill application via their system. (Should your application be selected for nomination, we will return editing access to you so that you may make tweaks ahead of the national deadline.) See the Wellesley Churchill page for detailed application information and advice.
  • Laboratory placementshould be included in your official application (unless applying for the MASt/Part III Mathematics): may simply be an email from the prospective PI.
  • Transcripts: For the initial campus competition, unofficial Wellesley College grade reports may be submitted with your application via the official Churchill application. Also required, at least an unofficial transcript/grade report from any other institution attended for post-secondary studies, such as an institution from which you transferred or at which you studied abroad. Note that official transcripts may be required for application to Cambridge in October; please plan ahead. (Should your application be nominated and paying for an official transcript would be a financial difficulty for you, we can order and pay for an official Wellesley transcript for you, no questions asked.)
  • References: please request 4 references via the official Churchill application system (not this Wellesley system), noting that these should all come from STEM faculty and ideally from STEM research supervisors (get as many letters from research supervisors as possible). Please enter your recommenders' contact details into the official application system, so that they may submit their letters there. Letters of reference may come in after you submit your official application for committee review, and even after the campus deadline.

  • at least a draft copy of your Cambridge postgraduate degree course application, which you must submit to Cambridge by the October deadline to be considered for the Gates and other scholarship funding, listing Churchill as your 1st-choice college.
