What is a math curriculum?

A math curriculum is a structured set of lessons, objectives, and materials designed to guide the teaching and learning of mathematics at a specific grade level or educational stage. It outlines the key topics, concepts, and skills students are expected to learn, as well as the sequence in which they are taught. A math curriculum may also include assessments, teaching strategies, and resources to support both teachers and students throughout the learning process.

What are some common challenges faced when developing and implementing a math curriculum, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in math curriculum development is aligning content with both state standards and the diverse learning needs of students. Curriculum developers often need to balance rigorous academic goals with accessible instructional strategies. Collaboration with teachers is essential to gather feedback on what works in the classroom and to adjust materials accordingly. Staying updated with the latest educational research and technology can also help ensure the curriculum remains engaging and effective. Open communication between curriculum teams and instructional staff can help address these challenges and foster successful implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a math curriculum specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Math Curriculum Specialist, you need a solid background in mathematics education, curriculum development experience, and often a teaching license or advanced degree in education or math. Familiarity with state standards, assessment tools, and digital learning platforms is commonly required. Strong analytical skills, creativity, and the ability to collaborate with teachers and administrators help drive effective curriculum adoption. These skills are crucial for ensuring math curricula are engaging, standards-aligned, and effective in improving student learning outcomes.

The Mathematics Content Coach serves as a content-area resource to help teachers maintain a clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, what standards have been taught, what standards remain to be addressed, and where adjustments to pacing or instructional priorities may be necessary to support student achievement.

Please note – while this is an online school position and all instruction occurs virtually, travel and face to face attendance will be required several times per year to support in person state testing and student events.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to residents of Florida.

  • Help teachers identify prerequisite mathematical skills and standards that may need to be revisited to address learning gaps.
  • Support vertical alignment across grades 3–10 to ensure appropriate progression of mathematical concepts and skills.
  • Assist teachers in prioritizing essential standards while maintaining appropriate balance between new learning, remediation, and spiral review.
  • Monitor student performance on classroom, benchmark, diagnostic, and state assessments to evaluate progress toward standards mastery.
  • Facilitate content-specific planning and data discussions focused on pacing, standards coverage, and student mastery.
  • Identify and recommend curriculum resources and supplemental materials aligned to specific mathematics standards and student needs.
  • Collaborate with Instructional Coaches, teachers, and school leadership to connect mathematics content priorities with effective classroom instruction.
  • Maintain documentation related to pacing, standards coverage, student mastery, and identified instructional needs.
  • Remain current on state mathematics standards, curriculum expectations, assessment requirements, and content-specific best practices.
About You
