Job description

Job Title: Secondary Math Specialist

Location: Early College School at DSU
Reports To: Administration
Position Type: Full-Time/10-month

Position Summary

The Secondary Math Specialist provides instructional leadership and targeted support to improve mathematics teaching and learning in grades 7-12. This role focuses on strengthening curriculum implementation, increasing scholar achievement, supporting teachers through coaching and professional learning, and ensuring alignment with state standards, assessments, and college- and career-readiness expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Leadership & Coaching

  • Support secondary mathematics teachers through job-embedded coaching, modeling lessons, co-planning, and observation/feedback cycles.
  • Facilitate professional learning communities (PLCs) focused on data-driven instruction, instructional rigor, and equitable math practices.
  • Support implementation of high-quality instructional materials and research-based math strategies.

Curriculum & Assessment

  • Ensure vertical and horizontal alignment of math curriculum across grades 7-12.
  • Collaborate with school leaders and teachers to develop pacing guides, unit plans, and common assessments.
  • Analyze formative and summative assessment data to identify trends, gaps, and instructional priorities.
  • Support preparation for state assessments, SAT/ACT, dual enrollment math courses, and other college-readiness benchmarks.

Data & Scholar Achievement

  • Use multiple data sources to monitor scholar progress and inform instructional decisions.
  • Support intervention planning for scholars not meeting grade-level expectations, including MTSS and special populations (e.g., scholars with disabilities, English learners).
  • Partner with teachers and administrators to develop and monitor math achievement goals.


 

Equity & Access

  • Promote culturally responsive and inclusive mathematics instruction.
  • Support strategies that increase scholar engagement, mathematical discourse, and access to rigorous coursework for all scholars.
  • Collaborate with special education and support staff to ensure appropriate accommodations and instructional supports.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work closely with school administrators, counselors, and instructional staff to support schoolwide academic goals.
  • Serve as a content-area expert and resource for secondary mathematics instruction.
  • Stay current on best practices, state initiatives, and emerging research in mathematics education.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a related field
  • Valid secondary mathematics teaching certification
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of successful secondary mathematics teaching experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state math standards and secondary math content

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Mathematics, Curriculum & Instruction, or Educational Leadership
  • Experience with instructional coaching or teacher leadership
  • Experience working in diverse or early college/high school settings
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools and assessment platforms

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong content knowledge in secondary mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, etc.)
  • Ability to coach and support adult learners effectively
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
