Math Content information

What is a math content specialist?

Math content specialists are professionals who develop, review, and curate educational materials related to mathematics. They ensure that math curricula, textbooks, assessments, and digital resources are accurate, effective, and aligned with educational standards. These specialists often work with teachers, publishers, or educational technology companies to create engaging and accessible math content for students of various grade levels.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a math content specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Math Content Specialist, you need a strong background in mathematics, curriculum development experience, and often a degree in math, education, or a related field. Familiarity with educational technology platforms, assessment tools, and standards like Common Core is typically required. Exceptional communication, creativity, and analytical thinking set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure the creation of engaging, accurate, and accessible math materials that enhance student learning outcomes.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals creating math content, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals developing math content often encounter the challenge of presenting complex concepts in a clear and engaging manner suitable for diverse learners. Balancing accuracy with accessibility, ensuring alignment with curriculum standards, and incorporating interactive or visual elements can also be demanding. To address these challenges, collaboration with educators, iterative feedback from students, and staying updated on pedagogical best practices are essential. Working in cross-functional teams with editors, designers, and subject matter experts further helps ensure high-quality, effective math content.

Job description

About the Team

The Virtual Preparatory Academy of Florida is a K–12 tuition-free online public school serving students statewide. At VPA Florida, we provide a safe and nurturing environment where every student has the opportunity to be understood and inspired through a customized learning path that includes live interactive sessions and personalized teacher support.

The Mathematics Content Coach provides content-specific support to teachers in grades 3–10 to ensure consistent implementation of standards-aligned mathematics curriculum and appropriate instructional pacing. This position partners with teachers to monitor standards coverage and mastery, analyze student performance, maintain alignment to pacing guides, and identify standards that require additional instruction, intervention, or reinforcement.

The Mathematics Content Coach serves as a content-area resource to help teachers maintain a clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, what standards have been taught, what standards remain to be addressed, and where adjustments to pacing or instructional priorities may be necessary to support student achievement.

Please note – while this is an online school position and all instruction occurs virtually, travel and face to face attendance will be required several times per year to support in person state testing and student events.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to residents of Florida.

About the Opportunity
  • Support mathematics teachers in grades 3–10 with implementation of standards-aligned curriculum, pacing guides, and instructional resources.
  • Monitor pacing throughout the school year to ensure priority standards and required mathematical content are taught within established instructional timelines.
  • Work with teachers to track which standards have been introduced, taught, assessed, mastered, and still require instruction or reinforcement.
  • Support teachers in unpacking mathematics standards and understanding the concepts, skills, and levels of rigor students are expected to demonstrate.
  • Review curriculum maps, pacing guides, lesson plans, and instructional resources to ensure alignment with grade-level mathematics standards.
  • Analyze student achievement and standards-mastery data to identify strengths, instructional gaps, and standards requiring additional attention.
  • Collaborate with teachers to adjust instructional pacing and priorities based on student performance and standards mastery.
  • Help teachers identify prerequisite mathematical skills and standards that may need to be revisited to address learning gaps.
  • Support vertical alignment across grades 3–10 to ensure appropriate progression of mathematical concepts and skills.
  • Assist teachers in prioritizing essential standards while maintaining appropriate balance between new learning, remediation, and spiral review.
  • Monitor student performance on classroom, benchmark, diagnostic, and state assessments to evaluate progress toward standards mastery.
  • Facilitate content-specific planning and data discussions focused on pacing, standards coverage, and student mastery.
  • Identify and recommend curriculum resources and supplemental materials aligned to specific mathematics standards and student needs.
  • Collaborate with Instructional Coaches, teachers, and school leadership to connect mathematics content priorities with effective classroom instruction.
  • Maintain documentation related to pacing, standards coverage, student mastery, and identified instructional needs.
  • Remain current on state mathematics standards, curriculum expectations, assessment requirements, and content-specific best practices.
About You
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Education preferred.
  • Five or more years of experience in education with demonstrated experience or expertise in mathematics.
  • Strong knowledge of mathematics standards, curriculum, pacing, and assessment across grades 3–10.
  • Strong understanding of mathematical learning progressions, prerequisite skills, and vertical alignment across grade levels.
  • Experience developing, implementing, or monitoring curriculum maps and pacing guides preferred.
  • Experience analyzing standards-level student achievement data and identifying instructional priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers to identify content gaps and develop actionable plans for addressing them.
  • Comfortable using curriculum platforms, student data systems, spreadsheets, and virtual learning platforms.
  • Committed to standards mastery, continuous improvement, and student academic achievement.
