Job description

Outsmart is a mission-driven, early-stage startup reimagining higher education for the age of AI by creating an entirely new collegiate experience that expands access and opportunity. Backed by $38M from top venture firms including Khosla Ventures, Forerunner, DST Global Partners, and Lightspeed, the company is led by former Duolingo executives and a founding team that also includes Emmy Award winners. With a strong culture centered around high-impact, detail-oriented team members, Outsmart is already seeing significant traction, generating 1-5 million weekly organic views on social media.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll work with a highly talented and collaborative team to develop Outsmart's math learning experience from curriculum architecture through content creation, assessment design, and learner feedback loops. You'll work closely with product managers, engineers, and fellow learning designers to build rigorous, engaging, and scalable math courses that bring joy back to learning. As an AI-native company, you'll also shape how AI tools and data insights are woven into curriculum development, content generation, and continuous improvement.
Who You Are
  • Recent PhD grad in Math Education, or a closely related field
  • Teaching experience in undergraduate mathematics (as instructor, TA, or course designer)
  • Strong pedagogical content knowledge - you can break down complex math concepts into clear, scaffolded learning sequences
  • Comfort with technology and eagerness to learn AI-assisted content tools and workflows
  • Familiarity with learning standards and frameworks (e.g., CCSS, NCTM practices) is a plus
  • Collaborative and low-ego - you give and receive feedback well and enjoy working across disciplines
  • Bonus: experience with edtech platforms, app-based learning, data analysis, or curriculum research

What You'll Work On
  • Course content development - author and refine lessons, exercises, and problem sets across the math sequence in partnership with the Senior Learning Designer
  • Assessment creation - build formative and summative assessments that measure proficiency and surface actionable learner insights
  • AI-assisted content workflows - use and help improve AI tools for content generation, review, and quality control
  • Content quality and accuracy - proofread, test, and validate math content for correctness, clarity, and pedagogical soundness
  • Learner data review - analyze how students interact with your content and use those insights to iterate
  • Documentation - contribute to course specs, style guides, and internal standards that keep the team aligned

What Helps You Succeed
  • You're curious and adaptable - excited to apply your research skills in a fast-moving product environment
  • You balance depth of knowledge with a willingness to learn new tools, workflows, and ways of working
  • You communicate with clarity and are energized by cross-functional collaboration
  • You take initiative and don't wait to be told what to improve
  • You're passionate about making math accessible and even enjoyable for a wide range of learners
  • You see your PhD not as a finish line but as a launchpad

Salary Range: $90K-$120K
