Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Sr. Principal Material Process Engineer. This position is located in Roy, UT and supports the Sentinel program.

Job Description:

Work with design engineers in selection and application of non-metallic materials systems, this includes environmental coatings, adhesives, sealants, composite materials, and supporting hardware.

Create Material, Process, Component Specifications or Source Control Documents to meet Program Requirements

Review and analyze materials, components, and processes selected for use in new designs against program specific PM&P requirements to determine suitability

Evaluate and/or develop risk mitigation strategies to manage non-compliant/prohibited PM&P usage in new designs

Assess risks associated with part/material obsolescence and lead the identification and selection of alternate and/or substitute parts/materials when necessary.

Evaluate materials, components, processes, for use in various flight environments, and develop associated ageing studies to inform service life estimates and the development of aging and surveillance plans to meet program service life requirements.

Work with manufacturing and subcontractors to resolve qualification, producibility, and testing issues for non-metallic materials, parts and related application processes.

Review detail and assembly designs (including engineering bill of material(s), part approval requests, design documentation, and part object attributes in a Product Lifecycle Management System.

Provide technical support to production operations, including Global Supply Chain, procurement and others to resolve M&P related issues

Author specifications and requirements for the procurement of qualified and compliant parts and materials.

Participate in special processor audits at supplier facilities, supporting Mission Assurance with subject matter expertise as the cognizant authority for special processes.

Support requirements tailoring activities, as applicable to Non-Metallic materials and process requirements.

Develop and improve internal processes and procedures associated with the review and disposition of part/material approval requests (from subcontractors and internal design teams)

Develop test plans and procedures for the qualification of non-metallic materials, parts, and processes

Develop and execute aging studies and related test plans / procedures to inform the development of service life estimates for age sensitive (non-metallic) parts and materials

Support Program Subcontractors with non-metallic Part requirements interpretation and review of Subcontractor Data Requirements Lists (SDRLs)

This positions standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 9 years of experience with Bachelor's degree, 7 years of experience with Master's degree, or 4 years of experience with PhD.

Must be a US Citizen and have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Security Clearance.

Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance


Preferred Qualifications :

Bachelor of Science degree in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, or applicable STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) discipline

Familiar with the Arrhenius methodology and the simulation of accelerated aging.

Working knowledge of MIL-STD-11991 and application to missile programs, MIL-STD-1568 for corrosion prevention of Aerospace Weapons Systems, and MIL-STD-7179 Finishes, Coatings, and Sealants for the Protection of Aerospace Weapons Systems.

Working knowledge of Failure Analysis, Root Cause & Corrective Action, component specifications, component screening & qualification, component application qualification, and related installation/assembly process specifications for space, air vehicle, ground support applications.

Experience as a responsible test engineer, managing planning and execution of one or multiple test campaigns

Experience in the review and approval of subcontractor specifications, drawings, test plans and procedures.

Active DOD Secret or Top-Secret clearance


Primary Level Salary Range: $111,700.00 - $167,500.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.The application period for the job is estimated to be 20 days from the job posting date.
