Material Science Research information

What is a material science research?

A Material Science Research job involves studying and developing new materials or improving existing ones for various applications. Researchers analyze the structure, properties, and performance of materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. They work in industries like aerospace, electronics, energy, and healthcare to enhance material efficiency, durability, and sustainability. This role often includes laboratory experiments, computational modeling, and collaboration with engineers and scientists to develop innovative solutions.

What does a material science research do?

Material Science Researchers often work on projects that involve designing, synthesizing, and characterizing new materials or improving the properties of existing materials for applications in industries like aerospace, electronics, energy, or healthcare. Daily responsibilities may include planning and conducting experiments, analyzing test results, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and preparing technical reports or publications. Depending on the organization, you might also contribute to patent filings, prototype development, or scaling up processes for manufacturing. This role offers variety and intellectual challenge, as each project can present unique scientific puzzles and opportunities for innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in material science research?

A career in Material Science Research requires a solid background in physics, chemistry, and engineering principles, typically supported by at least a bachelor's or master's degree in materials science or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory instruments, analytical software (such as SEM, TEM, XRD), and data analysis tools is essential, and professional certifications can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, teamwork, and effective written and verbal communication help researchers thrive in multidisciplinary environments. These skills are vital for conducting rigorous investigations, interpreting complex data, and driving innovation in material development and applications.

Job description

VITO is further expanding its research program Sustainable Materials and Chemistry. In doing so, we focus on the development of innovative materials and processes that enable the transition towards a low-carbon and circular society. In collaboration with industry and leading knowledge partners, we develop sustainable technologies and bring them to market.

Our focus is on advancing COโ‚‚ capture technologies using innovative solid adsorbents. Within this context, we are further developing our technology platform on shaping and surface modification of porous materials, including techniques such as 3D printing, coating and granulation.

As a senior material scientist, you will play a key role in strengthening and expanding this technology platform and its applications in COโ‚‚ capture, bridging fundamental research with industrial implementation.

What you will do
  • You drive the development of next-generation COโ‚‚ capture technologies, including the design, shaping and testing of porous solid sorbents.
  • You take a leading role in acquiring, coordinating and executing scientific research projects, with a strong focus on building a sustainable and impactful project portfolio.
  • You contribute to the further development and valorization of the shaping and coating technology platform for porous materials for CO2 capture.
  • You translate scientific concepts into practical, scalable and economically viable solutions for industrial implementation.
  • As a recognized VITO expert in this domain, you present at (inter)national forums and publish in high-impact scientific journals.
  • You initiate and develop (inter)national collaborations with industrial and academic partners, identifying opportunities for new projects and strategic partnerships.
What you bring
  • You hold a PhD in Engineering or Sciences (Chemistry, Materials Science, Bioscience Engineering or related fields) with at least 5 years of relevant experience in CO2 capture by solid adsorption and/or adsorption testing
  • You have a strong background in material synthesis, surface modification, powder processing, or the shaping of porous structured materials
  • You have experience in an industrial or industry-oriented R&D environment
  • You have a proven track record in acquiring funded research projects and the ambition to further grow a research portfolio
  • You combine strong communication skills with the ability to build and leverage (inter)national networks
  • You have a proactive, entrepreneurial mindset, with a customer-oriented attitude and eye for opportunities.
  • You are a flexible team player who can work independently and take initiative.
What we can offer
  • An attractive salary package supplemented with extra-legal benefits such as allowances, insurances and a modular holiday package.
  • You work at our office in Mol and will have a great deal of freedom and flexibility in your job that enables you to achieve an attractive work-life balance.
  • Innovation is our key asset, and we give our employees the opportunity to undertake additional training and keep up to date with developments in their specialist field. In fact, we expect this of them.
  • The opportunity to be part of an organization with an international reputation, known for its advanced technological research and scientific consultancy.
  • Together with 1.200 VITO colleagues, you will be part of making the difference in the systemic change that is required in order to achieve a sustainable society.
