Production Quality Control Technician - Steel America
Purpose:
Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Production Quality Control Inspector to support structural fabrication operations in Norfolk, VA.
This role ensures that all welding and shipfitting is performed in accordance with company procedures, customer requirements, NAVSEA standards (if applicable), among other related duties.
Job Description:
  • Perform quality assurance audits or checks on the work of welders and fitters assuring the use of correct procedures, materials, processes, and technical instructions.
  • Perform non-destructive inspections on all components as required by NAVSEA specifications, blueprints and work procedure requirements to include NDT inspections for structural fit-up and final weld.
  • Provides information and suggestions to the Production Manager to help prepare Corrective Action Requests and Preventative Action Requests.
  • Supports trades leadership in compliance of NAVSEA Standard Items and other customer related requirements.
  • Works with CSI/SA Quality Assurance, USCG, Navy, ABS, HII, and other representatives to coordinate inspections.
  • Conducts inspections of work areas and other QC checkpoint inspections.
  • Completes required documentation and maintains production quality control records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Must have at least five (5) years' experience in NDT and Quality Control / Assurance in structural fabrication.
  • Must have the following NDT Certification: VT.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of AWS D1.1 (Structural Steel), D1.2 (Aluminum), D1.5 (Bridge Code), and D1.6 (Stainless Steel).
  • Must have dimension accuracy control experience.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, negotiation, communication and writing skills.
  • Must have strong organizational skills.
  • Must be able to get access to Government Facilities
  • Must understand NAVSEA Standard Items, ISO requirements, and other Government Specifications.
  • Must have understanding of and experience in ABS construction standards.
  • Must be proficient in all Microsoft 365 products.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and a clean DMV record.
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Prefer related Department of Defense experience including direct experience with government customer relations.
  • CWI certification preferred.
  • GD&T experience preferred.
  • Additional NDT certifications (MT, PT, and/or UT) preferred.

Travel Requirements:
  • Occasional Travel; 25% or less.

Physical Requirements:
  • Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Climb, Reach, Push and Pull, Stoop, Crawl, Kneel, Balance, Lift and Carry various objects and equipment.
  • General shipyard/industrial environment. Work is has physical demands that require frequent movement up to 65% of the time.
  • Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there is minimal exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Hear, talk, and smell.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available, but also requires safe navigation and regular partnership with operations teams within shipyard/industrial environments.
  • A considerable amount of time is spent operating a personal computer.
  • Must be able to climb up and down stairs and spend time moving throughout the facility and onboard marine vessels.
