The ND Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (ND DOCR) has a rewarding opportunity as a full time, Licensed Addiction Counselor in the Treatment Department serving the Missouri River Correctional Center and Burleigh County in Bismarck, ND. This position provides crisis intervention, and group and individual therapeutic counseling services to residents.
The Missouri River Correctional Center is a minimum-security, open-campus facility dedicated to dynamic security and successful reentry, operating in innovative collaboration with Burleigh County to house a DOCR unit within the Burleigh County Jail. As a Licensed Addiction Counselor, you will provide case management, crisis intervention, and group therapeutic counseling services to individuals, families, and clients at our minimum-security facility that focuses on building skills to allow transitioning residents into the community. These services include the assessment and treatment of complex cases such as mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.
  • Interview clients to collect necessary information to evaluate the need for services.
  • Analyze information obtained through records, testing, consultative reports, and related professional sources to appraise interests, aptitudes, abilities, and related characteristics; participate as a member of a triage team to develop and maintain treatment and rehabilitative plans for each client.
  • Provide direct case management, counseling or psychotherapy and addressing problems of a complex nature to individuals, family, and group clients.
  • Provide individual skills work to clients as assigned.
  • Coordinate or facilitate appropriate therapeutic services to clients through the use of community service providers.
  • Serve as a counselor to high-risk clients such as sex offenders, potentially violent, and/or severely mentally ill.
  • Aid clients in utilizing offered programs and applying the skills learned to affect successful transition into the community.
  • Observe and monitor client behavior to determine effectiveness of counseling techniques.
  • Consult with other staff members involved with the client to assess treatment and rehabilitation plan progress.
  • Provide ongoing recommendations regarding client treatment and rehabilitation plans.
  • Prepare and maintain case records for each client according to appropriate reporting guidelines.
  • Work with community partners to assist in recovery and rehabilitation of the client utilizing individual, group, and family counseling.
  • Provide training, evaluation, or supervision of other staff and/or students in the counseling field as needed.
To be considered for this position, you must have one of the following: Salary is dependent upon experience
Addiction Tech/Trainee - Bachelor's degree with emphasis in related field; or high school diploma (or GED) and one year of experience in appropriate function. Must have completed all but two academic courses required, for the addiction counseling field, in a bachelor's or master's degree program, in addiction studies or closely related social science or health care field. Individuals in this class must complete all coursework, training and/or tests, and successfully obtain an addiction counselor license, from the North Dakota Board of Addiction Counseling Examiners, within two years of the date hired.
Addiction Counselor I - Requires a bachelor's degree in Addiction Counseling, Addiction Studies, Social Work, Counseling or Psychology, AND current licensure as an Addiction Counselor by the North Dakota Board of Addiction Counseling Examiners.
Addiction Counselor II - Requires a bachelor's degree in Addiction Counseling, Addiction Studies, Social Work, Counseling or Psychology, Licensure as an Addiction Counselor (LAC) by the ND Board of Addition Counseling Examiners, AND two years of experience as a Licensed Addiction Counselor. A Master's Degree in one of the majors listed above will substitute for one year of experience. Only professional-level addiction counselor experience in a private or public facility is qualifying and given credit.
