Kitsap Mental Health Services (KMHS) is hiring a Co-occurring Disorders (COD) Therapist to join our multidisciplinary Pathways team in providing integrated, recovery-focused treatment to clients experiencing both mental health and substance use challenges. In this role, you’ll participate directly in treatment planning, deliver individual and group therapy, assist clients in gaining stability and resources, and help ensure continuity of care across behavioral health and community partners. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about integrated care, motivational interventions, and supporting adults on their recovery journey.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Provide care coordination services for an assigned caseload, including individual, group, family counseling, crisis intervention, and case management.
• Conduct Substance Use Disorder assessments and determine level of care placements using ASAM criteria.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the needs, symptoms, and treatment considerations for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
• Demonstrate familiarity with medications used in Substance Use Disorder treatment (MAT/MOUD).
• Develop, write, implement, evaluate, and revise integrated COD treatment plans in collaboration with the treatment team.
• Utilize motivational interviewing, stages of change theory, harm reduction, stage-wise treatment strategies, and other clinically appropriate behavioral interventions.
• Educate and support families; advocate for client rights; and collaborate with community partners including DSHS, court systems, housing authorities, and other agencies.
• Support clients in accessing primary care, dental care, and developing overall health self-management skills. Coordinate psychiatric and medical care with the team.
• Provide crisis intervention counseling; coordinate with Designated Crisis Responders and crisis services when indicated.
• Document all client services and progress in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
• Participate in daily staff organizational meetings and treatment planning review meetings.
• Provide education and information regarding substance use concerns, mental and physical health, and daily functioning. Coordinate treatment with internal and external SUD providers as needed.
• Assist clients with obtaining resources and information that support autonomy and daily living needs.
• Monitor LRA compliance for assigned clients; plan and facilitate LRA extensions with MCOT and court personnel; collaborate with CRT regarding revocations when appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications:
Level I
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, social services, or behavioral health field.
EXPERIENCE: Completing Master’s internship requirements.
LICENSURE: Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration. Must meet qualifications for Substance Use Disorder Professional or Trainee.
Level II
EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in Psychology, social services, or behavioral health field.
EXPERIENCE: Experience working with clients with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders.
LICENSURE: Must meet qualifications for Substance Use Disorder Professional or possess a Co-Occurring Disorder Specialist License Enhancement (RCW 18.205.105)
Preferred Qualifications:
EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in Psychology, social services, or behavioral health field.
LICENSURE: Washington State associate clinical license (LICSW-A, LMHC-A, LMFT-A) or higher. Current credential as a Substance Use Disorder Professional.
Performance Requirements:
KNOWLEDGE:
- Maintain a working knowledge and skill in verbal de-escalation skills as outlined in MPAC/CPI trainings and other agency-mandated trainings
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of psychotropic medications and their side effects and contraindications with drugs of abuse and report any relevant observations to care team medical personnel.
- Pursue professional growth and development by seeking out learning opportunities, coordinate with unit manager to share with team, and if approved, integrate into work practices. Maintain working knowledge of current Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health treatment recommendations, trends in community mental health, including health care reform, electronic medical record, and computer technology.

- Demonstrate ability to work efficiently and effectively, organizing workload by prioritizing and managing multiple tasks. Maintain, or exceed, productivity standards as established by policy and evaluated by unit manager.
ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners such as CRT, housing team, treatment teams, AIU, Residential, KMHS
Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.
Work Environment: Outpatient clinical setting. Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods.
Mental/Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to stand, sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, ascend and descend stairs, talk or listen and lift up to 50 pounds. Peripheral vision is also required for this position.
