What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Masons Apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Masons Apprentice, you need basic knowledge of construction principles, physical stamina, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with masonry tools, safety equipment, and possibly OSHA safety certification are commonly required. Attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and strong teamwork skills set successful apprentices apart. These competencies ensure quality workmanship, safety, and effective collaboration on job sites, laying the foundation for a successful masonry career.

What are some common challenges a Mason's Apprentice faces during their first year, and how can they overcome them?

During the first year, Mason's Apprentices often find the physical demands and precision required for tasks like mixing mortar, carrying bricks, and following detailed instructions to be challenging. Adapting to outdoor work in varying weather conditions and maintaining safety standards can also be tough. The best way to overcome these challenges is by actively seeking guidance from experienced masons, consistently practicing new skills, and prioritizing personal safety. Building strong communication with your team and being open to feedback will help accelerate your learning and integration into the crew.

What are Masons Apprentices?

Masons apprentices are entry-level workers who assist experienced masons in building and repairing structures made from brick, stone, and concrete. They learn the trade through on-the-job training and sometimes through formal apprenticeship programs, helping with tasks like mixing mortar, carrying materials, and preparing surfaces. Over time, apprentices gain the skills and experience needed to become journeyman masons, capable of completing more complex masonry work independently.

Job description

The Opportunity

This is not just a job. It is a craft. As a Mason at BMI, you are the skilled professional whose hands shape every wall, arch, and structure we build. Your workmanship is what our clients see, what our reputation is built on, and what will still be standing long after the scaffolding comes down.

We are looking for Masons who bring precision, pride, and professionalism to every course they lay. Whether you are setting brick, block, or stone โ€” you understand that quality is not optional at BMI. It is the standard.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Craftsmanship & Execution

  • Lay brick, block, and stone according to plans, specifications, and layout lines
  • Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and field measurements
  • Maintain proper alignment, plumb, level, and joint consistency on every course
  • Ensure workmanship meets or exceeds BMI quality standards and project specifications
  • Maintain appropriate production pace without sacrificing safety or quality
  • Protect finished work from weather, damage, and contamination throughout the project

Safety & Jobsite Standards

  • Follow all OSHA regulations and BMI safety protocols without exception
  • Wear required PPE at all times and enforce the same standard with those around you
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area throughout the workday
  • Immediately report hazards, unsafe conditions, or near-miss incidents to the Foreman
  • Work safely on scaffolding, elevated platforms, and in all weather conditions

Team Collaboration

  • Communicate material needs clearly and in advance to Mason Tenders and the Foreman
  • Provide clear direction to Mason Tenders to maintain steady, uninterrupted workflow
  • Support the training and development of apprentices and less experienced masons
  • Contribute positively to crew morale, professionalism, and jobsite culture
  • Participate in daily coordination with the Foreman and project team

Equipment & Tools

  • Maintain, clean, and protect personal hand tools and company equipment
  • Operate power tools and equipment only as trained and authorized
  • Report damaged or defective tools and equipment promptly
  • Minimize material waste and protect all project materials from damage or loss
