Job Summary
The Marriott Library is seeking a student to work closely with Open Scholarship and Data Services as an assistant for Research Data Management. This position will allow the hired student to gain hands-on experience working with research data from a variety of disciplines and learning about data management, curation, and documentation with an emphasis on open science. It is an especially helpful opportunity for students interested in research and/or information science, as well as those interested in pursuing a career in data analytics, data engineering, or data governance.
The hired student will primarily serve as an assistant with our research data repository, The Hive (https://hive.utah.edu/). Working in collaboration with the library's two research data librarians, specific projects will include reviewing and helping to curate new data deposits, normalizing metadata, and mapping legacy metadata onto our new interface, including checking and updating metadata records and README files for internal consistency. The hired student will also have opportunities to assist with reporting related to The Hive and other research data management services. Experience working with APIs is a plus.
This work must be done on-site at the Marriott Library. The work schedule will be set to accommodate the student's course schedule.
For the Library to be able to appropriately monitor hours worked, part-time employees are generally asked to restrict their work with the University of Utah to Library employment only, unless an exception is granted.
Responsibilities
  • Reviewing and helping to curate incoming research data deposits for the University of Utah's research data repository, The Hive.
  • Normalizing metadata and mapping legacy metadata onto the repository's new interface.
  • Checking and updating metadata and README files to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Assisting with reporting, analytics, and generating data visualizations related to The Hive and other research data management services.
  • Additional responsibilities dependent on the hired student's qualifications and interests, which may include utilizing APIs or supporting other research data services initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in working with data, data analytics, and reporting.
  • Interest in Open Science and data sharing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.
  • Willingness to learn new procedures and workflows.
  • Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • Good English comprehension and written language skills.
  • Current University of Utah student enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters.
