Book Arts Studio Assistants work as part of a team of faculty and staff in a busy studio environment. Studio Assistants are expected to help maintain an environment that is welcoming, promotes belonging, and is conducive to attentive work; focus on assigned tasks while on the clock; follow studio policy, modeling appropriate use and behavior for students and studio users; work with care and attention to detail, but also with efficiency and the goal of meeting deadlines.
Assistants work on a broad range of tasks-some hands-on (like materials preparation, studio monitoring, or exhibition installation) and some desk/computer-based (answering program-related email and phone calls or data entry). Assistants use specialized equipment for the preparation of materials for workshops and outreach programs; assist with printing projects for the Library, Book Arts Program, and Red Butte Press; organize and maintain studio spaces and storage; assist visiting artists; help with communications and publicity; and contribute to exhibitions installation. A critical aspect of the position is providing letterpress support to students and other studio users as a monitor during open studio. The ideal candidate enjoys handwork, is willing to take on repetitive and meticulous tasks, possesses strong communication skills, values working with people from all backgrounds, and is interested in learning new skills. Job emphasis will vary based on the skills and interests of the person hired, special project timelines, and programmatic need. follow studio policy, modeling appropriate use and behavior for students and studio users.
Because of the nature of detailed and accurate record-keeping for grant purposes and the importance of time-intensive, detail-oriented preparation of materials, this position demands painstaking attention to detail and excellent time management skills. Because this position is in constant contact with patrons, strong communication skills are essential.
Responsibilities
Preparation of materials, studio upkeep, and general office duties in support of all Program and Red Butte Press initiatives including K-12 Outreach, Community Programming, Academic Courses, Exhibitions, and Red Butte Press editions. Depending on the level of previous and acquired experience, this position might also act as teaching assistant for K-12 and community programming. Advanced skills would allow teaching assistance for classes.
Minimum Qualifications Preferences
  • BFA or majoring in Art, Art History, or English. Experience with letterpress required; bookmaking or other handskills strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional communication skills, demonstrated eye for fine-tuned details, and strong record-keeping capabilities, time management, and organizational competencies required.
  • Proficiency in Office software required; Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign strongly preferred.
  • Must be a current University of Utah student enrolled 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters.
  • Six months clerical or customer service experience required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Must be a current University of Utah student. For the Library to be able to appropriately monitor hours worked, part-time employees are generally asked to restrict their work with the University of Utah to Library employment only, unless an exception exists.
