Software Engineer

Backflip AI

San Francisco, CA • On-site

Full-time

Posted 17 days ago

Job description

The Role
Backflip is looking for experienced Software Engineers with strong full-stack fundamentals to join our team. You'll build the APIs, services, and infrastructure behind our products and ship features end to end, ensuring they meet the reliability, security, and performance expectations of our enterprise customers. We'll look to you to be product-minded, think holistically about the end-user experience, and bring a hands-on blend of architecture, infrastructure, and product sense.
As a small team, we're all generalists who work wherever the product needs us. We're looking for engineers who thrive on autonomy and individual responsibility, and who are happy to jump in across the codebase.
This is a hybrid role based in our San Francisco headquarters.
What You'll Do
  • Design and build full-stack systems and the backend services, APIs, and infrastructure behind our products
  • Take projects from ambiguous problem to shipped solution with minimal process
  • Deploy products and ML models to production, and iterate quickly based on real customer feedback
  • Develop integrations with CAD software, 3D tools, and other third-party applications
  • Build the systems that make Backflip enterprise-ready: security, authentication, multi-tenancy, and observability
  • Collaborate with the AI team to turn new model capabilities into shipped product
  • Contribute to technical architecture, design reviews, and engineering best practices

What We're Looking For
  • 4+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • A strong generalist who can build, ship, and scale complex full-stack systems
  • Experience architecting backend systems, services, APIs, and data flows, for reliability and scale
  • Fluent in a modern backend stack (TypeScript, Node.js, Python, RESTful APIs, CI/CD)
  • Able to build and ship user-facing features end to end, from data model to UI (TypeScript, React)
  • Experience building secure, production systems for enterprise customers
  • Pragmatic and product-minded. You balance speed and quality, and enjoy taking features from idea to shipped

Bonus points for experience with ML, data, or search systems, building plugins for desktop CAD tools, or genuine excitement about the mechanical design space.
You don't need to check every box. If you're a strong engineer who's excited about the problem, we'd love to hear from you.
About Backflip
Mechanical design, the work done in CAD, is the rate-limiter for progress in the physical world. However, there are only 2-4 million people on Earth who know how to CAD. But what if hundreds of millions could? What if creating something in the real world were as easy as imagining the use case, or sketching it on paper?
Backflip is building a foundation model for mechanical design: unifying the world's scattered engineering knowledge into an intelligent, end-to-end design environment. Our goal is to enable anyone to imagine a solution and hit "print."
Founded by a second-time CEO in the same space (first company: Markforged, exited for $2.1B), Backflip combines deep industry insight with breakthrough AI research. With investor Ashish Vaswani (transformer inventor), and backed by a16z and NEA, we raised a $30M Series A and built a deeply technical, mission-driven team.
