What is a marketing operations manager?

A marketing operations manager supervises marketing department staff to maintain productivity and smooth operations. Unlike a marketing project manager who focuses on a particular marketing campaign, a marketing operations manager oversees the overall marketing department and ensures the staff meets their goals. Job duties include evaluating market trends to develop new marketing strategies, creating department goals, delegating project tasks to employees, and training new marketing employees. Qualifications for this career include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in marketing, business administration, or a related field, extensive marketing experience, and leadership skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a marketing operations manager?

To thrive as a Marketing Operations Manager, you need expertise in marketing strategy, data analysis, project management, and a bachelor’s degree in marketing or a related field. Familiarity with marketing automation platforms (like HubSpot or Marketo), CRM systems, and analytics tools is typically required, along with certifications such as Salesforce or Google Analytics. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help drive cross-functional collaboration and process optimization. These skills ensure seamless marketing execution, data-driven decision-making, and alignment between marketing initiatives and overall business objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by marketing operations managers when aligning marketing technology with organizational goals?

Marketing Operations Managers often encounter challenges when ensuring that marketing technology stacks effectively support broader business objectives. Integrating new tools with existing systems, maintaining data accuracy across platforms, and securing buy-in from cross-functional teams can be complex. Additionally, staying updated with rapidly evolving marketing technologies while balancing cost and utility requires ongoing attention. Successful Marketing Operations Managers proactively communicate with stakeholders, regularly evaluate tech performance, and foster a culture of continuous improvement to address these hurdles.

Role Overview

We're looking for a process and execution-minded Project Manager to support our Marketing organization. This role brings clarity, structure, and momentum to marketing work by translating strategy into actionable plans and ensuring projects are delivered on time and with excellence.

This Project Manager is a self-starter who thrives in fast-paced environments, loves collaborating with teams, and brings order to complex, cross-functional initiatives. You're someone who naturally builds structure, spots gaps, and helps teams move work forward more effectively.

What You'll Do

  • Own end-to-end project management for marketing initiatives, from intake through delivery

  • Translate high-level strategies into clear execution plans with defined timelines, milestones, dependencies, and ownership

  • Partner exceptionally well cross-functionally, collaborating with teams across Marketing and the broader organization

  • Lead project kickoffs, run weekly status updates, and keep stakeholders aligned and informed

  • Proactively identify risks and blockers, propose solutions, and maintain momentum across projects

  • Support campaign launches and key initiatives with strong operational execution

  • Maintain strong, consistent use of tools like Asana and Airtable to ensure visibility, accountability, and alignment

  • Continuously evaluate and improve processes, workflows, and playbooks to increase efficiency, clarity, and team velocity

What We're Looking For

  • 2-3 years of experience in project management, marketing operations, or a related role

  • Process- and operationally minded; enjoys building structure, improving workflows, and creating scalable systems

  • A strong collaborator and team player who thrives in highly cross-functional environments and understands how decisions impact multiple teams

  • Proven ability to manage complex projects end-to-end with minimal oversight

  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity, shifting priorities, and fast-moving work

  • Clear, concise, and solutions-oriented communicator

  • Highly self-directed with a strong sense of ownership and follow-through

  • Experience using Asana and Airtable or similar project management tools

  • Bonus: experience in high-growth or in-house marketing environments
